Background Info:
I use the lower cargo area quite often (I don't have a spare tire) and wanted to find a better way to lift the cargo tray up.
The Project:
It's simple really....I just added handles to the tray.
  1. Pick your favorite drawer handles for your local hardware store
  2. Mark your holes, remember to measure twice
  3. Drill
  4. Add a brace to the backside to provide support and space (since the screws might bottom out on the handles because they are meant for a thick wooden drawer) I used a scrap piece of aluminum, but it can be anything.
  5. Install the handles
  6. Done
Conclusion:
Overall, it worked like a charm and it feels more natural to lift the tray. Plus, when the tray is full of stuff, it doesn't sag or bow as much as grabbing from the edges.
One added benefit is for my wife because the old method of grabbing the tray edges was a bit too wide for her shoulders. She did mentioned that it would be nicer if the handles were closer so she wouldn't have to reach over so far. Thus, if I were to do it again, I would get really long handles to match both our heights and arm lengths.

Looks great. I used this for quite a while ... and then ended up just taking it out and filling the whole spare tire compartment with all kinds of extra stuff. (snow socks, lights, high volume air pump, extra 3d printed parts for folks i meet, gloves, etc...) a bunch of that probably doesn't need to be in there anymore ... but that's a different problem.

Anyway, the handles look nice!

Nice! Mine doesn't have a tray. Didn't realize that was an option. Now I want one.

Oh, wait. You have an S. I guess there is nothing like that for the T.

Your handles look great - well done!

I keep waffling about whether or not to keep the tray - it looks nice when I lift the "cover" and I keep a handful of things there: Compressor kit, FA kit, multi-tool, work gloves, and my set of JackPucks. Underneath (I also don't have a spare) is where I keep my jack, a XL JackPuck, torque wrench, portable charger, and extension cords if I'm going to a VRBO that allows me to charge. When tailgating or moving my kids to/from college, the tray and all but the necessities come out to give me that well to haul more stuff.
