I use the lower cargo area quite often (I don't have a spare tire) and wanted to find a better way to lift the cargo tray up.
The Project:It's simple really....I just added handles to the tray.
- Pick your favorite drawer handles for your local hardware store
- Mark your holes, remember to measure twice
- Drill
- Add a brace to the backside to provide support and space (since the screws might bottom out on the handles because they are meant for a thick wooden drawer) I used a scrap piece of aluminum, but it can be anything.
- Install the handles
- Done
Overall, it worked like a charm and it feels more natural to lift the tray. Plus, when the tray is full of stuff, it doesn't sag or bow as much as grabbing from the edges.
One added benefit is for my wife because the old method of grabbing the tray edges was a bit too wide for her shoulders. She did mentioned that it would be nicer if the handles were closer so she wouldn't have to reach over so far. Thus, if I were to do it again, I would get really long handles to match both our heights and arm lengths.
