Please correct me if I’m wrong, but according to Rivian the Large Pack gets 350 miles of range whereas the “soon to come” MaxPack will get around 400 miles. I’ve got an R1T Max pack ordered and my price for that is an additional $10,000. If I change my order for a Large pack I’ll save the ten grand. Yes, our here in the boonies extra range is useful to have - but for only 50 more miles why on earth would I stick with the Max? What am I missing?

I consistently see 350 miles in Conserve when taking road trips on the Large pack, and that’s pre-update. Will be doing a couple thousand miles next week though, so should get a much more accurate view of my range after that trip.

I agree with your sentiment. $10k is a lot for what you get and if the quad motor and a truck sooner is at all appealing to you then switch to large pack.

I’ll be honest I have not seen the need for more range with any on road adventure.

50-60 miles more is realistic even with the conserve boost. When you think your truly usable miles on a road trip and being gentle on your battery pack, that's 10-20% up to 80-90%, 70% of your pack. Rough maths say 56 miles.

But you are correct, is it really needed? Hell no. $10k buys so many crossword puzzles, overpriced lattes, and other unnecessary things. Now we just need better charging stops than Walmart and Taco Bell...

If you were regularly towing where every mile counts, maybe it would be worth the cost. Otherwise I'm getting more range than any other EV I've owned with the large pack. I would never use the extra range.

Did you not get the email. There is no Max Pack Quad motor coming(in the near future). It’s been changed to Dual Motor Max pack and won’t be $10k extra.

100% agree! Range has been ample. Not sure I’d want more weight added. Only reason would be if you tow all the time

I think that is what Rivian is struggling with. Adding weight(batteries) will take away available payload. A truck that has more range but doesn’t have enough payload left to haul/tow anything is useless.

Couple of thoughts here...

First, we haven't seen specific specs on the Dual/Max yet and the only thing Rivian has said is it'll have more than 400 miles of range. This discussion is also predicated on the thought that it'll be the same $10k price once it goes into production. Again, we haven't seen the numbers so it may be a bit early to speculate here.

Second, I'd bet that two larger motors will weigh less than four smaller ones. Then the question becomes how much weight is saved in motors, vs. added in for the Max battery?

I was holding out for a max pack for a long time and finally gave in. I tow a lot (7000lbs twice a week) and wanted that extra range. I finally gave in and went with the large pack and it’s been enough. Range daily is not a problem, range on road trips is not a problem and the extra 25ish miles when towing really wouldn’t make a difference for me. If there comes a time when I need to tow more than 100 miles frequently neither battery pack size would be suitable anyway.

We have seen the numbers from Rivian. No need to speculate. They may change any prices of the trucks and options, but they are posted as of now:

Charging should be faster for the same amount of miles. Especially if getting between stations right now requires going above 80% wherever you are driving. Max pack will also give more flexibility on when you need to stop. Large pack is totally workable but max will be better.
