Have you looked into getting window film installed on your widshield? XPEL claims to have film installed on the outside that protects from this very issue happening.

Purchase windshields in bulk, keep in garage (some kind of a break on price)

Get full glass coverage with your auto insurance with no deductible. Even if your auto rates go up because of repeated glass claims, perhaps it might still be cheaper in the long run.

Always keep a very long distance between you and the car ahead in front of you such that debris bouncess off the road and will not hit you.

Tesla glass is very soft also. I myself purchased glass coverage, fairly inexpensive and it already more than paid for itself.

But the best I have done to prevent this from happening is to keep way back from vehicle in front of me as much as possible.

Good luck to you. It really sucks.

2022 R1T already on my 3rd windshield from previous tiny impacts causing irrepairable damage. one impact I was able to temporarily ‘fix’ with a kit.

Latest road trip going 70mph, and maybe a rice grain hit it and the next day there’s a 6+ inch crack!

there is no way this is normal, that in 2 1/2 years all 4 very minor impacts caused windshield failure.

Previous Rivian experience with the windshield was ‘our glass etc is fine’ you had bad luck.

I feel like Rivian is going to gas light me again and say there’s nothing wrong with the glass or how it fits on the truck.

There is absolutely something not right!

Im about ready to get rid of the truck cause it’s almost unusable on the highway if any speck hits the glass causes breakage.

In the pic you’ll see the impact is less than 1/16” and barely made a mark.

I'm not paying $2k every six months for new glass.

any advice for how to proceed with Rivian?

Plus I’m 2+ hours from an SC and they take forever to get appointment.

Maybe follow the car ahead of you a little closer or further back. I'm on my 3rd Rivian and haven't had a crack yet. Probabbly just jinxed myself.

My understanding is that Safelite can do the glass but not calibrate cameras that look through it. You might consider separating replacement from calibration. One, then the other if needed. Maybe the Safelite glass is better. BTW: I had Safelite replace the glass in my (traded for my R1T) Subaru Outback and never had the need to have the local Subaru people recalibrate their Eyesight system...seemed to not need it. I did hear that Rivian was looking at working with Safelite on calibration. Maybe they've gotten that done.

Have you looked into having it replaced by someone other than Rivian? Also if the crack is small enough, you can get it filled / repaired before it grows to something bigger. Sorry it happened though. I would be frustrated too, especially considering the cost and time commitment dealing with the SC.
Yes, I filled one myself with a repair kit. There is only 1 Rivian certified shop but it’s further away then the 2 Rivian SCs.

  1. Get film for windshield and ceramic coat it perhaps?
  2. Get rid of the car.
  3. Follow cars at a larger distance.
The last impact would have flown over most cars. But Fuyao glass is shit from what I hear.

I’m actually taking my truck to the SC tomorrow to replace the windshield. A very tiny chip turned into a spider web across the entire windshield.

I’m contemplating getting a wind / bug deflector - I wonder if anybody has tried one on their truck. I haven’t found one that looks good yet but I’m open to suggestions.
Superb suggestion! I had a factory one on a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland - looked good and worked better.
Rivian R1T R1S 4th crack in windshield. OMG I’m so done cooke city

I just had to replace a windshield on my Mustang Mach-E. The Ford dealer to a local auto glass company. I had to pay the $250 deductible on the replacement cost just under $2K. Just saying…

My worst damage, resulting in a crack that immediately spread top to bottom before I got home, came from a Mini Cooper in the adjacent lane, 3 car lengths ahead. Shit happens, just sayin'.

My old 2000 Disco 2 recently rolled over 200k miles, my buddy owns it now, and it's still rocking the OEM windshield. It's gone through more head gaskets, and motors for that matter, than windshields. I'll take the windshield bill any day.
The engine was bulletproof but it went through three steering boxes in 200k and a dozen driveline donuts.

Two comments/questions: 1) Doesn't your insurance cover windshield replacement? 2) Why not have someone like Safelite replace the windshield instead of going 2 hours to service center? Most glass replacement companies come to you.

For now, very few third parties have the equipment and software to calibrate the Rivian ADAS sensors. Safelite might be an option soon nationwide but who knows.

Satellite is not able to calibrate the sensors used for driver + / safety. So you have to take it to Rivian for that after having the glass replaced. An extra trip and time.

I went through two windshields in close succesion and rock dings in the edge of my hood (R1T and wife's R1S). I added Exoshield windshield film and the aeroskin deflector (primarily to cover up the hood dents) and I haven't had any issues since (coming up on a year). Can't attribute it directly, but sharing....

Has anybody tried one of these? I would love to see an installed picture.

I’m curious to see if it does anything to range and how effective it could be deflecting bugs and small rocks from hitting the windshield.
Aero development and testing is extremely expensive. Can assume that company did none for any of the vehicles they make their product for, or have ever employed an aerodynamicist. Plus, you would have to drive at very high speeds for it to generate enough turbulence to redirect objects heavy enough to crack windshield. If trajectory is right, the turbulence might even accelerate the object. The claim of deflecting insects is plausible… the rest, snake oil that was popular in the 90s. If the hypothesis behind the product was valid, automakers would have had 30 years to bake it into their vehicle designs and made aftermarket obsolete. And yet…
