Mike drop! We have a winner!
This last weekend I met a Rivian owner on the Oregon coast who was towing a 10,000 lb Airstream from Florida. (Howdy, if you’re here!) We discussed the silly people who think EVs can’t tow long distances.

And seeing that the rules also say "any road trip", the Tesla a month and a half ago isn't the first time I've flown across the country to buy a vehicle and drive it home. Did this trip in 2021:
2021 Road Trip.webp

Backstory: My youngest kid was 16. He had gotten a hand-me-down Subaru from his grandparents. Someone T-boned him and totaled it. He decided he wanted something fancier. Insurance paid out *REALLY* well for an old Subaru. He found a souped-up AWD 2001 Audi A4 auction. He set his max price, I bid on it, and won.

He wanted him and a friend (with no driver's license or experience driving,) to fly out, pick it up, and drive home. He was thinking they'd just sleep in the car at rest areas, driving 16 hours a day.

He was 16. No.

So I was arranging to have it shipped. The shipper fell through literally the day they were supposed to show up (thankfully I got my money back) and no other shipper was anything resembling a reasonable price. (1/3 or more of the purchase price of the vehicle.)

So I suggested my kid and I fly out and drive it back, staying in hotels. He didn't really want to drive across the country with me. "Who wants to drive across the country with just their dad?"

So I recruited *MY* dad to drive across the country with me.

Flew out on June 12 (hello, Manhattan!)
IMG_0041.webp

Buying the car from someone in Massachusetts, I had to provide my own trip permit/temp tag. I got one from my state, and to make absolutely certain pit wouldn't get lost, I it in my one carryon bag. We flew into New Haven, CT and stayed the night there. Unfortunately, the puddle jumper to New Haven was packed. While my small carryon was small enough to bring on the puddle jumper, the flight being too full meant I had to "gate check" my bag. Not a huge deal, it was a "walk onto the tarmac, set your bag down next to the stairs to get in the plane, board the plane, when you get off at the other end, it'll be waiting at the bottom of the stairs."

It wasn't waiting at the bottom of the stairs when I got off.

"Well, they must have taken it in to baggage claim."

It wasn't at baggage claim.

How the f#&$ do you lose a gate-check bag on a puddle-jumper‽?

Hotel was 30 minutes from the airport. Spent 90 minutes in the airport while they tried to find the bag. Got to the hotel at 11 PM.

At midnight, the airline called "we found it!" (Thank goodness, I couldn't drive the vehicle the next day if they hadn't!) - Nobody was available to bring it to me until the middle of the next day. Thankfully the hotel shuttle was still available. Shuttle driver took me to the airport to pick up my bag and come back.

Downside: I had a little "windshield mount CarPlay screen" to use for the drive home - whatever they did to my bag, the screen on that was shattered. (I should have insisted I be allowed to hand-carry it as I was planning to do the whole trip.)

Whatever. Next morning, we decided since we was so close, and the seller wasn't available until noon, I'd make this a true "coast to coast" trip and took a quick detour to the waterfront:
IMG_1584.webp

(Touching Atlantic on June 13, 2021.)

Took combination of trains and an Uber to the seller's house, picked up the car. It was in decent shape, and included multiple "tubs" of spare parts (it was race-tuned, but included all the stock parts, including two catalytic converters, and even the stock wheels with winter tires on them.)

Started our drive.
IMG_1590.webp

My dad came along to help on the drive.

This was a manual-transmission car.

My dad has never driven a manual-transmission car.

He took the second turn driving.

Stopped for gas, then parked at the convenience store. Trying to back up, the *VERY* slight downhill-forward angle of the pavement meant he rolled forward, catching the underside of the bumper on the curb, then ripped the bumper loose when actually backing up.
IMG_1665.webp

He did not drive again. Stopped for the night in Upstate New York.

Neither he nor I had seen Niagara Falls, so we did a short side-trip to see it.
IMG_1610.webp

Made it past Chicago on the 14th.
FullSizeRender.webp

Next major stop was in South Dakota (I think we stopped in Wisconsin somewhere the night of the 14th? I dunno, after Chicago the 14th and 15th were so boring the only photo I have is the "entering South Dakota" sign on the 15th.)

Decided to see the in-progress Crazy Horse Memorial on the 16th:
IMG_0448.webp

Went into Mount Rushmore. It was ridiculous. We went exactly far enough to actually get a clear picture, then left.

Then drove to Butte, Montana. RIP all the bugs we splattered:
IMG_1737.webp

On the 17th, did the rest of the way:

On any road trip, the first sighting of Mount Hood is always a "welcome, you're almost home."

Arrived home a little past 8 PM. Almost did the extra 2 hours to actually hit the Pacific that night, but my dad was tired and didn't want to do that part, and my wife *DID*, so went to the beach the next day.

(It was very windy. As it usually is on the Oregon Coast.)

This trip won't win prizes for distance, but it's up there for fun and remoteness.

This map is an approximation of a solo camping trip from last summer. To get a sense of how fast charging is changing, a third of the recommended chargers on ABRP didn't exist last summer. I can also think of a handful more new options along the route that aren't on ABRP's itinerary.

Update: I received the camera, and have done a little testing. It seems decent for a dash cam.

One *HUGE* note: If you read the original post in this thread, it says "If you’re the lucky winner, we’d love for you to share a honest review after using the F17Elite. Your feedback can help others in the community learn more about the product and decide if it’s right for them." There is no "requirement" to provide a review in the original statement. ("We'd love you to…" is not "The winner must agree to…")

After being declared the winner, they attempted to have me commit to posting a review on multiple forums/social media channels before they would commit to send it. That is not a contest/giveaway, that is an "influencer promotion". I did not absolutely commit to providing a review, because this "bait and switch of a contest" rankles me. But after driving in the rain tomorrow, I will finish up a proper review video - one in which I will be sure to mention this company's slightly-slimy promotion tactics.

Thats SOP for many of those Chinese companies 'marketing' departments.

Dear Charon and all forum members,

We sincerely thank Charon for the honest feedback and want to apologize to him for any confusion or negative experience caused by our communication during this giveaway. In our follow up messages, we failed to clearly convey that sharing a review was not required to receive the prize.

In response, we have already taken immediate steps to improve:

1. All future giveaways will have clear, unambiguous terms stated directly in the original thread.
2. We will always highlight that providing a review is not required to claim a prize.

We respect and value every participant in our activities. Specifically regarding Charon, we want to emphasize that he is under no obligation to provide a review, and that his personal choice is fully respected.

We are grateful to Charon and the community for helping us identify this issue. We have had internal discussions and will continue to improve, with the goal of making our future events more transparent and enjoyable for everyone.

Wishing you all the best,

Redtiger Team
