We picked up our new R1S dual max (Shadow) in December from the Reno SC and put just over 1000 miles on it around town and one trip over Donner pass to shop in Sacramento. It finally got to play in the dirt as we explored the Pyramid lake area north of Reno.

Pyramid lake is the home of a Native American tribe of Paiute people, much of the lake is open to the public with the proper permits, it is particularly famous for its trophy trout fishery and recreational boating. On this adventure we explored some areas closed to non tribal members so I would not advise anyone to enter these areas without permission or the escort of a tribal member.

The Pyramid

We drove from Carson City and covered 220 miles on our round trip, using 94Kw and getting 2.35 mp/Kh. Most of the driving was 70+ mph freeway and 2 lane country roads with 2 friends and our 90lb silver lab, Keeva, in the back. We did 20 plus miles on dirt roads that were all in pretty good shape. I must say most of my exploring in this area has been in my GMC Sierra 3500 diesel, and the Rivian made this trip feel like a luxury, the bumps and ruts disappeared and the short hill climbs were no challenge.

Overlooking the Winemucca lake playa.
We explored an area of petroglyphs that have been dated to nearly 14,000 years old, the oldest of their type in North America.

Our final leg to the Pyramid was a pretty easy gravel and sandy road that passes by remarkable tufa formations and beautiful lake views.

All I can say is wow, this rig is fantastic, I have explored the Nevada desert in a wide range of vehicles and there is nothing like the Rivian for comfort and driving pleasure. I have to admit I was a bit worried about reliability (after reading this forum) since we would be out of cell range with a 6 mile walk to call for service. But everything worked as it should and I have more confidence in the capability of the R1S.

Beautiful spot! Congrats! For all the moaning on here, at the end of the day, it’s one of the most amazing driving experiences available. Look forward to seeing your next adventure.

I wanted to remind people of the option of a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). Not that I’d likely trigger it for just a vehicle breakdown with a 6 mile walk to cell coverage, but maybe if there was extreme weather at the same time. The PLB is a satellite transmitter and sends a signal to SAR (Search and Rescue) teams within minutes. This provides them with your GPS coordinates and your contact info (registration every 2 years to update the contact info on a specific PLB device).

Edit: link to the PLB I use - $370 at Aircraft Spruce

I first got my PLB for carrying with me when flying the glider (not required to have an ELT like powered aircraft), but I carry the PLB with me anytime I’m venturing off the beaten path, and particularly when I’m doing that by myself.

There are also devices like the Garmin InReach that provide 2-way communication and also communication with family instead of just emergency services, but those have a monthly service contract and fee. The PLB doesn’t have a monthly fee, but its only function is to call emergency services and say, “send in the cavalry”. (Edit: typo of cavalry vs Calvary - so that’s why my phone capitalized that initially; makes sense now)

Some cell phones (Apple iPhone 14 and up) also have 2-way satellite communication with emergency services, and at least for now, do not carry a monthly fee for that services. A PLB general has to have the battery replaced once every 5+ years, so it’s much less likely to have a dead battery than a cell phone.

Good points, I upgraded my iPhone for this reason, have the Garmin but never had to use it and I am less daring when out in the wilderness in my more mature age.

I believe that's a Weimaraner.....OP, care to clarify? If it is a Weim, we are in Tahoe City and will be picking up a pup (will be our 3rd) next month....maybe we have a Weim/Rivian meetup?

Keeva is a Silver Lab, we picked her up from Jobs Peak kennel in the Carson valley. Same coloration as the Weim and the same recessive gene that gives the Weimaraner that color. She is technically a registered Chocolate Lab. But I am sure she would be happy to play with your pup, she is great around other dogs and particularly likes off leash walks in the forest as she mostly grew up on our property in Oregon.

Thanks for the clarification, I was wrong. She's beautiful!
