Follow along as we attempt our first long EV road trip…with a trailer for extra spice!
Maryland to Wisconsin, through the Upper Peninsula, and back. Roughly 2000+ Miles or so.
Planning the route with A Better Route Planner. We will post the charging stops, and other successes and failures!
Stay tuned!
Day 1:
4 charges all at Electrify America. The last one was terrible, half the charges not working, low speed etc. but we did make it and went 479 miles in a single day!
Highlights:
Met some friends! A lightning and another R1T
The navigation system was…good! No deviations from Apple or google maps.
Low lights:
Chipped windshield in the first 50 miles
Our hotspot wouldn’t work the one time we wanted it.
A few take aways:
These chargers are not built for trailers. I was sticking out every stop. Thankfully no honks from other traffic.
The seats in this vehicle are awesome! No seat fatigue all day.
All in all: first day of driving for a total of 479 miles averaging 1.79 kw/mi. Keep in mind a net positive gain in elevation though, so likely better on flat roads.
More tomorrow!
Day 2:
Made it to Wisconsin!
900 miles complete after 2 days. Averaging 1.68 Kw/Mi, with a trailer doing 70-74 Mph on I-80/90.
Electrify America had few misses due to slow charge rates or full stalls. Trailer still sticking out at every charge stop. We were, however, able to get sufficient charge to get to our stop over in southern Wisconsin.
Regarding the navigation: The estimated range remaining at destination doesn’t seem to reflect the drive mode we were in. Appears to be some oversight, and will make for a great future update.
Tomorrow gets interesting, as fast charges north of Madison, Wi drop off. If it goes to plan, we will be getting into our day 3 stop over with just a few miles to spare. Again, what could possibly go wrong?
Wish us luck!
Day 3:
Finally found a charger we could drive through! And made it to our family home in northern Wisconsin!
We kept our speed limited to 60-65 Mph for the sake of range, and made it 200 miles from 98% to 14% with the trailer. Our efficiency has been better than A Better Route Planner, by about 5% on average, which is pretty good in our book. Currently installing the new update while the R1T charges off a dryer plug.
Over 1,110 miles in 3 days, all using Electrify America.
Day 6:
Quick Update...We start out on the road after 3 days in northern Wisconsin, where we used the truck to do truck stuff.
One rookie mistake I made: I didn't check the trailer tire pressure before leaving, and they were comically, dangerously low. So I used the on board air compressor and got them up to spec. I am interested in seeing how that improves efficiency. We'll see as we have around 230 miles to get to our first campsite in the Upper Peninsula.
Day 7:
200 easy miles stopping once to charge. Efficiency popped up to 1.85 mi/kWh after properly inflating trailer tires at about 60 mph average, so significant gain in my book.
Currently in a campground here using 50 amp RV power juice up. Got the new update so camp mode has been great!
Getting the truck level requires having all the doors shut and the charger removed. We cooked dinner via truck powered Instant Pot, and will be sleeping in the bed tonight.
Day 8/9:
We’ve crossed the UP using only RV campgrounds as our power source. I have come into one complaint: When the camp speaker is paired to your phone, the music pauses every time you open the door. It got so annoying I eventually deleted my phone on the truck to keep it from connecting to the R1T. But that has seriously been our only real complaint.
This truck has been so good to us, we are in awe actually. The hype, for us at least, has been backed by substance.
Coming down the LP of Michigan and back into Electrify America infrastructure, we are finding we are getting free charges at two (edited: four) different charging stations now. Love the free energy! We are about to hit 2,000 miles, with about 500 more miles until home. It’s been a great trip so far and will relay post-trip thoughts when we get home.
Conclusion:
We did it! 2,259.1 Miles, with trailer in tow, in the books. 1478.7 kWh for an average efficiency of 1.71 mi/kWh.
Overall, it was an amazing time. The truck performed in a stellar fashion, the charging infrastructure was adequate enough (supplemented by two campsites and a house dryer plug). The seats were great. The tech (navigation, Spotify, hotspot) all worked reliably. The A/C kept us comfortable, as did the seats. The camp mode update pushed at the right time, and we were able to take advantage of it for two nights outdoors. The amount of storage was invaluable...so much room for activities!
We made great memories, saw a part of America we had not seen before, and had the best vehicle I could think to use.
After it gets back from the service center for some pre-scheduled maintenance items, a well deserved detail/cleaning is in order!
