Quick takes on my R1T.

  1. Service has been great. Excellent. Terrific. Responsive, timely, and done well. Here in the wilds of northern New England there's a local tech who has handed both recalls with ease. Good guy, great communicator.
  2. As awful as pre-sale communications were, post-sale experience has been excellent.
  3. Truck itself is best vehicle I've ever owned...although i LOVED my 2019 BMW i3S REX...have had 911, F250 Superduty, multiple Audi A4 avants, VWs, even a 1969 Plymouth GTX Hemi convertible.
  4. Range is better than advertised w road tires and still pretty good with the mud-and-snows.
  5. Tonneau has never been a problem.
  6. The gear tunnel doors are dangerous - sharp points can really get your attention.
  7. Owners manual is really lacking - nowhere near comprehensive enough, for example it doesn't identify all the warning lights.
  8. Charging pad is marginally useful at best.
  9. The over the air service works pretty well, and I'm sure wil get better as we owners run into more issues. One somewhat distressing item - when a whole set of warning lights popped on, the service person could not identify them or if I needed to stop or whatever...
  10. The bike racks Rivian offers didn't work for me...not enough room between the bike's front tire and the rear of the cab. Got the Yakima ones where you take off the front wheel.
  11. Had one charging issue w Electrify America - evidently it screwed up the R1T software so i had to reboot as it wouldn't charge from any source.
  12. Range in the cold is actually minimally affected...although it only got really cold - as in 15 below 0 - for a day or so.
  13. That said, do NOT park your R1T in the cold for a couple weeks without making sure it is plugged in. The battery maintenance system and gear guard soak up electrons. If you have to leave it parked in the cold for a while (7+ days), make sure it is fully charged, turn off gear guard and cabin heating, and continually monitor charge status. And make sure you have a friend who can come drive it to a charger in an emergency.
  14. With the mud-and-snows and snow configuration it is a beast. Haven't gotten close to stuck, braking is really good, and no issues. And we've had a lot of wet icy conditions here.
  15. Things to have with you.
    1. Good tow rope - someone will need your help.
    2. a tailgate cargo net...the bed is small, so you may well need to transport stuff w tailgate down. this works well. That is, if you are one of the few who actually hauls stuff in your R1T...
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WTDC8RV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    3. Tie down ratchet straps
    4. Patience as you'll get lots of "what kind of truck is that...who makes it...yeah, but who makes Rivian...how far does it go...i'll never buy an electric vehicle because (insert mostly uninformed comment here).
Nice list. I'm at 1 year, 22K and agree...this has been my favorite vehicle.
I wish I'd had the service experiences you've had. Mine have all sucked, minus the torque recall. The SSF service techs really need to do better.
For the bike rack, I had a similar experience. However, reversing the bike mount and bike worked for me.
And very generous on the charging pad. It is a total fail, nearly as bad as the service visits.

Nice summary. I just passed 10k miles. The only point I completely disagree with you on is the charging pad. Ours is fantastic for my Galaxy Note 8 and my wife's Galaxy 9. Easily connects 100% of the time and rarely slides off other than really aggressive turns. I've come to accept that I'm in the minority on this and it is probably phone dependent though.

I need to get the tow straps for sure. Might look at the cargo net, but so far the couple of times I had something long enough to leave the tailgate down ratchet straps alone were plenty secure for what I was hauling.

It's by far the best vehicle I have ever owned, but the competition on my list of vehicles I've owned over the last 30 years is pretty easy to beat compared to yours, lol.

Very nice summary, Thank you! Any chance you can comment on tread wear?

sorry can't with accuracy...switched from 21 all seasons to the 20" mud and snow wheel package a while ago. Will measure tread depths when back home.

I bought my R1T with 12K miles, tires had not been rotated, at 14K tread depth in the red, front only. Back tires @5 MM (over half left). I pretty much say ditto about the above post. Never a bad charge, and no issues with gear guard doors. The best vehicle I ever owned. The factory service guy Jesus, was fantastic. I have owned 3 new Porsches, MB Sprinter, 2 ton trucks, an MGB, a TR3, you name it. The R1T is the excessively best truck/4x4, ever. I charge at home, in a garage, as well have done a 700 mile round trip in 3 days. Thank you Rivian.

SSF SC is terrible. Taking mine to Sac to hopefully get an ongoing suspension fixed. 4th times a charm.

I chuckled and chuckled for a good minute or more when I read your vehicle experience list. From a 1969 Plymouth GTX Hemi convert (fond memories of vehicle lust in my HS years) through to a Kubota backhoe. That is an awesome range of vehicles, man! As an R1S pre-order holder expecting mine in 4-7 months, it makes me happy to know your Rivian excels within your vehicle history.

Great write up.
I had a "yeah, but who makes it?" conversation just yesterday, and I don't even have mine yet.
Have you taken delivery yet?
I saw one in Chattanooga TN last Saturday -Rivian blue with ocean coast- it had me questioning my config 🤣

Don't second guess! They say always go with your first instincts on color choice for least regrets.

But you liked the blue, eh? I have not yet seen it in-person myself, but I hear its amazing, especially in the sun. Canyon Red was another possibility for me but wife has a 'soul red' Mazda CX-5. You can't have 2 red cars in the garage, right?

What is the consensus for best response to this question?

I liked the red, but I’m happy with CY. My fiancé has a red rav4, and we decided to never get similar cars again after we both had bright blue vehicles….
