Curious about the "Position 9" calculation, so I will wait for some more input if we can predict/calculate the character that we can give the insurance.
The check digit is calculated the same way for every vehicle. That's the only way that it can work - if every manufacturer had their own proprietary check digit algorithm then you would never be able to check the VIN validity.

See the details at:
https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-V/part-565#p-565.15(c)(1)
I tried this and it calculated the correct check digit for my 2022 R1T.

You can find an online calculator here:

Thank you for posting this exact thread. I am holding out to hopefully purchase the 2026 R1S and could use this information to (hopefully?) get an insurance realistic quote before i commit to the car. I have seen some stories in NJ of other cars around $4K, so a bit worried to add to the cost.
Adding my Gen1 QM increased my insurance increased by about $100 a year, replacing it with a Gen2-Tri dropped it $250, in NJ. Just so you know.

Thank you for the reply, extremely helpful. Will try to calculate for a 2026 Quad R1S (that's what I want), but what will happen may be another story :)

Good to hear! Disclaimers aside of things that affect insurance pricing, I sure hope the trend you observed in NJ will trickle down to me as well. Will report back when i am able to get a quote. It seems that different type of insurance providers are applying for an approximate 20% increase of services (I got a letter from Home owners insurance a week ago) for NJ for State approval.

One thing is certain for me, i love the car so much that insurance is not going to ruin it for me no matter what. I will find a way to make it happen by budgeting from somewhere else.

Homeowners nationally is whacked. Ours has tripled in 5 years just wrong.
