I could have sworn the description used to say forged, but now it’s saying Machined aluminum like all the other 21” and 22” options.

Rivian R1T R1S 20” rims still forged? 831C9DAB-0037-4847-B712-3C489D962CBC

It definitely used to say forged. This was how I justified the cost.

Another cost cutting. Paying the same for less. Below was taken from their web page. Not sure which one is foraged and which is machined.

Our 20" All-Terrains are your go-anywhere, do-anything tires. Designed to handle everything from rock crawling to dirt trails, these tires are great in everyday situations but really shine when the asphalt ends and the road gets rough. We offer two designs for the 20" wheel, both of which are forged and machined for a superior strength-to-weight ratio.

Are they really no longer forged? I'm definitely going to the 21s if so.

Rivian better watch out, there's a fuse lit in the used car market. Wholesale prices dropped a long time ago. Eventually there are going to be huge downward pressures on new car prices from an array of factors beyond their control from interest rates to recessions.

Some measure of deflation in the new market over the next 12 months is definitely not out of the question. Actions taken now will effect buying decisions 8 months from now.

I'm not on this "we're changing shit and taking a long time to get you the car" train forever and only have so much de-contenting patience. Sooner or later I pull the plug and give them the finger because I'm just not spending $100k to be a perpetual sucker. I thought this was supposed to be a Tesla alternative.

Both 20” wheel designs are forged, then machined to have the appropriate surface finish. These things are not mutually exclusive.
the paragraph you quoted says pretty clearlyboth designs are of forged construction.(there are two designs, one comes in bright or dark, the other is the grey wheel with machined accents on the spokes)

You can thank Monroe!
who’s Monroe, a new copywriter at Rivian?

Munro is about reducing complexity and simplified build. This alleged change has no time or warranty saving for them as it is a third party single item delivered to them. It is curious the wording has changed but I cannot see them create an identical wheel from different material 14 months into production.

I know who Munro & associates is ;)

their whole thing seems to be design optimization around cost(part count) reduction, ignoring that repair & serviceability is part of DFMA.

And even they wouldn’t suggest changing from a forged wheel to a cast wheel in an application where cast likely doesn’t meet strength:weight targets.

Oh, Scary! I'm sure Rivian is shaking in their boots. Even by car forum standards, the level of carping on this forum is next level.

Oh, Scary! I'm sure Rivian is shaking in their boots. Even for a car forum, the level of carping on this forum is next level.
Is it though? Or is it that some of us don't consider the R1x platform to be the only option available to them? If you have no problems hitting the eject button and picking up a Gladiator or Tacoma is it next level carping or weighing your options in the middle of a forum full of fans?

Me personally? I start to get manipulated enough I'll find another option. Heck, I'll stick with my current car list and buy a truck on the way to the junkyard just because I'm sick of today's new car world of hyper-integration.

So, me personally, that's where I'm at. I've literally had Crown-vic listings open recently so it's not even limited to Rivian.

Fake reservations, subscriptions, recalls, just to name a few, I'm done with all of it from every company and want out on a very real level.

I had a 1984 4-door Buick Regal with one mismatched door I took to a rich liberal arts college in the NE US in the early 2000s. Parked next to literal Porsche SUVs at times. I honestly felt like a liberated king.

I can have that feeling back. My mid-life crisis could be $10,000 instead of $100,000, just another selling point.
