I picked up my R1S (Green Machine) 2 years ago today. This was our first EV but was 100% ready to go for it. Before I picked it up I had a JuiceBox installed hooked up to a NEMA 14-50 outlet. 2 weeks after taking delivery we drove to Boston from central NJ for college tours, even getting hit by some snow on thew way home, truly learning by living.
What I love about my Rivian?
1. Size and interior space: we have used our third row multiple times as the vehicle is typically filled with adults, no issues and works great for short trips with adults in the 3rd row.
2. Storage space: We have done several college moves and I am always shocked how much stuff I can fit in this thing. Frunk, behind the second row or third row is just insane and something I have come to expect now from my future vehicles
3. Speed/Performance: Quad Motor performance is just crazy. Every time I hit the throttle it puts a smile on my face, never owned something like this.
4. Home charging: My JuiceBox has worked great, I don’t do scheduling just plug and change at home.
5. Plug and Charge: Doing this on EVGO or Tesla has been a welcome upgrade and something I hope others begin to offer.
6. Mobile Service: Had these guys out a few times to do tire rotation, 7500 mile service and they are always amazing.
7. Overall Quality: Aside from the a charging issue early on have had ZERO issues. Love this thing.
What I wish was different
1. CarPlay…. Not here to beat this dead horse but I do prefer it over the Rivian system
2. Service centers: I was told when I took delivery that the Edison NJ site was opening any day now. That site not only never opened but it is now officially off the list. I refused to drive to Brooklyn again. Did that for delivery, took me 4 hours round trip. Did it again for a problem another 4 hour trip. Trenton just opened and that is closer but with the number of Rivians in the area we need a central NJ location. Mobile service has also become hard to get an appointment with.
Service Visits
1. After 3 weeks my vehicle stopped taking an AC charge (couldn't get an appointment for about a month but it was fine as I had DCFC nearby)
2. At the 5 week mark my vehicle was dead in my garage. Turned out the charge port cover was stuck in a ‘close the door’ loop and drained the batteries. Rivian took it and a few days later they replaced the 12V, the charge port door and the charger (the no AC charge issue).
I did experience some fun with tires. This is not a knock at Rivian at all but a personal thing. Locally we have some tire shops or Mavis. At first Mavis said they will not touch an EV, which I found interesting. I ruptured a tire when I ran over something on I95 going 80mph. Had to have mobile service come replace the tire, no big deal. Wish I was explained how to use Tirejeck when I picked up the vehicle but easy enough to figure out. I needed to replace the other 3 tires a few months later. By now Mavis said they would do it, super nice guys willing to learn what is required to change the tires on a Rivian. I bought the tires on tirerack.com and Mavis did a great job. Unfortunately about 5 weeks later found a nail in the sidewall and had to replace a tire again. Once again Mavis was great. Tirerack also refunded me the cost of the new tire since they provide road hazard replacement.
Overall I am very pleased with Rivian and have had no issues since the charge port problem. Vehicle has been great and would gladly buy a Rivian again.
