One week ago I picked up my R1S in El Segundo. I wanted to thank those of you that have helped inform us in the que. Specifically the threads that focused on the few weeks before and after deliver - the first drive/week notes from you all with pros and cons has been a favorite. Rivian seems slammed with deliveries so the comms are much lighter than those that have reported earlier. Didnāt hear from a Guide until 1 business day prior to delivery. It was no big deal since I had the roadmap from reading many posts on the subject.
Since I have been driving it for a week, hereās my $.02 for anyone that is interested.
Drove from Mammoth Lakes to pick up in El Segundo at 400 pm on Monday. Spent about 40 minutes at Rivian. The āpaperworkā process was flawless; easier than buying an IPhone! Guide had a good read on my EV and R1S knowledge and my lack of patience. Iāve never owned an EV so he focused on a couple of major points about charging at home and on the road, a few system features, and then made me prove I could navigate a few of the screens. Then he let me go out into the wild (thatās not a negative). I immediately jumped on the 405 for southbound traffic to San Diego while on the phone with my buddy and Taycan owner for celebration and support. Within 15 minutes I was comfortable with regen in traffic, then I advanced to adaptive cruise, and in the last hour I played with lane control. As many have stated, even for a newb, the systems mentioned are easy to grasp.
Canāt wait to bring it back to Mammoth next week and try out the Rivian stations in Inyokern and Bishop. Rivian if you are listening and need a free PM/developer (Iām retired and available) in mammoth to permit one, call me!
Now for a condensed pro/con:
Pros: Easy EV (SUV) to stay ahead of with respect to controls and systems
Suspension is way better than expected. Minimum roll and sway - especially given the weight. a pretty cushy ride compared to my previous SUVs and current F250, and surprisingly a little smoother than the wifeās Cayenne.
Parking aids are also top notch. Overhead view helped me in and out of a tight spot in downtown San Diego.
Green charging bar. Without checking app or looking in car, I plugged into a ChargePoint station and could instantly identify that all was working.
Acceleration: wholly s*&t. Enough said.
Interior - comfortable seat, cooling worked well, filled with a few passengers in SD and got compliments on fit a finish, especially from Tesla owners. Also, I chose Ocean Coast but was worried it was too bright white. many on this forum have said that is was a very light grey not pure white like it looks in pictures. This was true and I dig the color (all previous owned interiors where dark brown or dark grey or black).
Nav systems - easy to use. I planned my San Diego to Santa Barbara route in my app on the phone and sent it to the car. It was waiting for me in the morning - seriously cool for road trips. Also, having the charge stations shown on the map with availability! Zero range anxiety on this leg. Left at 78% SOC, arrived in SB with plenty (Donāt hate me purists, i donāt recall or understand yet all the parametersā¦.).
Other interfaces - Music was intuitive and sounds good to very good. CarPlay - thought I would miss it, but nope. Never thought about it except,
Cons:
No text interface.
End of list!
Oh, and this is my dogs favorite car in the fleet
For those that care:
R1S/Limestone/OC/20s/ what am I missing?
