I just got the notice on my app that the 12 Volt battery needs to be replaced. I’m not really sure what that controls. Not wanting to be stuck somewhere, what are the issues if it can’t be replaced in a timely manner by Rivian.

I would make the appointment ASAP. When I got this .message, my original appointment was months away, just to get me 8n the queue, but they moved it to a week or 2 later. That says to me that it's pretty serious. I've heard that it CAN, in fact, leave you stranded. By necessity, I have to regularly leave my truck in a parking lot for multiple days. I noticed that the vampire battery drain increased, and progressively got worse, until it was replaced.

Don't ignore it and keep it plugged in as often as you can until replaced. Carry a battery jump pack and get familiar with how to get into the vehicle when it dies. It will leave you stranded if not addressed soon. If you are planning any trips away from a charger I'd take another car.

The 12 volt battery runs things like the ECU, it closes high voltage battery relays and such. If you have a dead 12 volt battery, you can't access the high voltage (traction) battery anymore.

What happens when a ICE car’s battery dies? Same thing. You won’t be able to start/boot-up and drive. Contact Support ASAP and submit service request.

I've already called for an appointment which is almost 3 weeks away unfortunately. I'm just wondering if it's just decreased range or other issues I may encounter??. I top off every night and now am going up to 90%. But the fact that there are so many more Rivians on the road today, but no additional service centers nearby is frustrating to say the least.

I had this warning a couple of weeks ago. I called and got scheduled a month out for mobile from ATL, then the next day service called back and said ATL said they would be up in a week to get it done.

I did ask about any issues while using the truck with this warning active and the response was do not let the truck SoC get below 20%, otherwise I shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Not the same thing. ICE battery dies, you can jumpstart the engine and drive to a service center. NOT the case with Rivian. I just had the 12 V battery die with only 48 HOURS NOTICE of an issue. Doing the jumpstart (with the cables by the tow hitch) only allowed me to open the driver door … it would not boot up the screens to even allow me to release the parking brake (over 70% charge in the main battery but no use to you).
Had to wait 48 hours for Rivian to send a tow truck who also tried to jump the car without any more success. He had to drag the car out of my garage on skids and bring it to the service center.
Honestly, I’m pretty shocked at this failure, for 2 years (R1T quad motor) I’ve been pretty happy but this issue is a deal breaker.

i totally concur. ICE much, much more benign. They didn't have to do it this way. The big battery could furnish an "alternator" output but always on/ The 12v battery would be backup for emergency lights. Fed law, i think. I dream on. People just don't entiendo!

Just to directly answer your question, the 12 volt battery is used to power up the "computers" in the vehicle. If this 12 volt battery fails, even if your traction battery (that's what they call the big 400+ volt battery that powers the motors) is fully charged, the vehicle will be not be usable because the "computers" cannot power up.
