  1. POLL: Would you like Rivian to adopt NACS Tesla charging standard?

If somebody can do a better job they're welcome in the marketplace. There's huge space between grid cost and tesla's fees at most superchargers, often double or triple or quadruple the wholesale price per kwh is charged to the customer. They'll need a few billion dollars just to buy the real...
  2. POLL: Would you like Rivian to adopt NACS Tesla charging standard?

I would order an R1S to replace my Model X tomorrow (assuming it would mean sometime next year delivery when my warranty is up) if Supercharger access in my area was guaranteed. I am not willing to own an EV without the option to use the SC network, CCS charging options in my area are pathetic...
  3. Motortrend tests R1T with 21" wheels -- "Quickest truck we've ever tested."

Rivian just casually making a pickup truck that stops harder than a lot of big fast sedans is the really amazing part of all this. That is where the Teslas in particular disappoint a bit. Amazing capability. I've driven every generation but I think the 930? The mid-80's-early 90's one and...
  4. R1S vs Model X

I have been in a lot of low-clearance (like, 72" clearance or less) garage situations where there's a beam or piping overhead or even solid garage deck above with model X. The doors work fine in those situations, you just have to use a different opening shape. Basically, the side segment of...
  5. Toyota BZ4X electric SUV

That's not going to be a 300-mile EPA vehicle, but I would expect Toyota's deployment strategy to lead to "as-advertised" real-world range similar to what the Germans are offering with their rated ranges.
  6. R1 vs Model S pricing

That's a bingo. They can sell every vehicle they make at sticker price, and are printing money and have a customer base accustomed to paying even higher prices just a few years back for an inferior product to what they're selling today. Model S P85D of 2016 was 20-30% more expensive, and not a...
  7. BMW X5-Xdrive45e Plug-in Hybrid while I wait for Rivian

The 45e powertrain is pretty awesome. I read on the X5 forums people routinely beat the EV range estimates. Makes sense with 111hp it's not exactly going to encourage cruising at high highway speeds in EV mode, and it doesn't really let you use all 24kwh.
  8. 2022 BMW iX

Danger longread ahead from passionately non-brand-loyal amateur industry observer the iX is a pretty-much direct Model X 5-seater competitor. It's not an R1S competitor IMO, R1S will have all the same dynamic shortcomings compared to iX that it has compared to Model X, because it's a...
  9. Rivian in last place (and I don't care) in EV efficiency comparison

Big wheels and tires on the Porsche in particular cause their ratings to be off IMO. The 19"-equipped base Taycan just did 280 miles on Car and Driver's 75mph constant-speed test. The base 19's on the "slow" trims use a 225/275 setup, the rest it's like 265 front 305 rear...way more wheel and...
  10. Rivian in last place (and I don't care) in EV efficiency comparison

Really only matters for recharge time over long distance anyway. Duh a high-profile 7000lb vehicle is gonna use a lot of juice Our X LR+ is "rated" (in terms of the consumption you need to hit to get 371 miles of range) at 270 wh/mi and meets or beats that in mixed driving, in good weather...
  11. R1S vs Model X

Alternatively, they could make auto HVAC that, you know, works Why is this so hard I swear I touch the HVAC controls like twice a year in our 2008 and 2015 with auto HVAC and the tech geeeenyuses at Tesla are trying to gamify being comfortable. I don't need the temperature to be a hand-eye...
  12. R1S vs Model X

Tesla should probably restart the production line first lol
  13. R1S vs Model X

Oh, and I will add, the doors do get a lot of attention, and kids seem to know the car and know it's the X as opposed to some other tesla. Happens a couple times a month some kid will be like hey it's the one with the gullwing doors! This is not necessarily a good thing if you just want to...
  14. R1S vs Model X

I have a Long Range Plus. It's a great family car, but it's not going to do Tahoe things very well. The door sills on it are the same height as a lot of modern sedans. The only reason it's a little tall-ish vs sedans is the bubble-shaped roof and the tall-for-a-wagon 29" tires. Model X and...
