  1. R2 Highway Efficiency Test: 80 MPH vs 70 MPH Changed Everything

The EPA should not include illegal speeds in their test cycle, that would just encourage people to break the law. This thread reminds me of Tesla Motors Club forum threads from 13 years ago. Yes, energy efficiency decreases dramatically as speed increases. Slow down, go farther before...
  2. Ketchum: Wait for LiDAR? - The Rivian R2 LiDAR story isn’t what you think

Yes, the full quote (to paraphrase slightly) is “If humans can drive using their eyes and brain then cars should be able to drive with cameras and a computer”. Elon is a semi-autistic engineer with no empathy, not a neuroscientist and his reasoning is fundamentally flawed. Human brains are...

  4. Ketchum: Wait for LiDAR? - The Rivian R2 LiDAR story isn’t what you think

No, if by “safe to say” you mean “very likely”. Rivian is relatively new to the autonomous driving scene. Yes, what you describe is what they hope to accomplish, but it is hardly a sure thing within that timeframe. And there are additional caveats beyond what you describe, as for example...
  5. R2 Three Day Ownership Review. Comparison to R1T. Efficiency and Range data!

I am sure that any car — gas or electric — will be less energy efficient with a window or windows down. The nice thing about an EV is that you can accurately measure the drop in energy efficiency.
  6. R2 w/ LiDAR, 19-inch wheels spied

It’s not that simple. Elon is fixated on a vision-only system and that has serious limitations in poor weather conditions, and there are always going to be edge cases that vision-only can’t solve. Rivian has taken a smarter approach and is using not only many cameras but multiple radars and...
  7. R2 Three Day Ownership Review. Comparison to R1T. Efficiency and Range data!

Thanks so much for your very helpful review! After a few more days of driving, are you still experiencing the front seat issue you described or were you able to make some seat position adjustments and resolve it? I’ve driven Tesla FSD twice in the past year and my experience was that FSD is...
  8. R2 w/ LiDAR, 19-inch wheels spied

As @srkz noted Tesla only had a few not-for-sale Lidar vehicles. Elon’s decision to go with vision only was originally because he said Lidar added too much cost and he hated the look of Lidar. He grandly proclaimed a decade ago Tesla could achieve L4-5 with vision only and he was wrong...
  9. R2 “Share your Preferences” survey

Thanks for the replies. There is no “next steps” link on my R2 reservation page. So I asked the Rivian Assistant website chatbot how to take the survey. It stated that, since I am in Canada, the survey is not yet available and I would be informed in the future when I could take the survey. So...
  10. R2 “Share your Preferences” survey

I have an R2 reservation. Received an email from Rivian, subject line ”Final steps before your R2 invite date”. It says that I need to “Complete the Share your Preferences survey”. I logged into my Rivian account but cannot find a link to that survey. Can someone please tell me how to access the...
  11. Esker Silver R2 finally marketed by Rivian! Hi-res official images (Updated With More)

Just to confirm; so after Launch Edition production is complete, Esker Silver will be the standard/no cost color? I hope so, because I love it. And easy to keep looking clean.
  12. Question about using cruise control while towing

Sorry, you are correct, I was thinking of the first 8 to 6 years of S/X production not the more recent cars. Have not bought a Tesla since 2018 so am a bit behind the times… ;)
  13. Question about using cruise control while towing

Sure. Bottom of page 249. As others more knowledgeable than I have pointed out (actual Rivian owners) selecting a different “Autonomy Drive Style” is how you change following distance. If I have that wrong I would welcome a correction.
  14. Question about using cruise control while towing

Have you read the R2 manual? Page 249 discusses that.
  15. Question about using cruise control while towing

Thanks. Yes, that is how the Model 3/Y work but not how the S/X work, as they have a dedicated stalk for adaptive cruise control functions. I’ve owned an S and currently own an X and 3, so am familiar with all those models (as well as the first Roadster). I really want an R2 but will probably...
  16. Question about using cruise control while towing

Excellent, thank you. Page 209 of the R2 manual (I can’t copy/paste from it) makes clear that only Manual Cruise Control (Rivian capitalizes it) is available when towing. It is initiated by pulling the right stalk towards you, and disengaged by pushing it away from you. All it does is maintain...
  17. Question about using cruise control while towing

Thanks, I was thinking that since ACC did the following distance adjustment automatically, maybe regular cruise control allowed some sort of manually controlled following distance. After 13 years driving Teslas (bought a Model S in 2013) I’m so used to the Tesla ACC being automatic that I...
  18. Question about using cruise control while towing

Sorry, another question that I should have asked earlier. Although Rivian’s adaptive cruise control is not available while towing, does the regular cruise control allow you to manually control the following distance while towing using the up/down scroll wheel motion? Thanks.
  19. Question about using cruise control while towing

Only in the Model 3/Y. In the early Model S/X (including my X) there is a special small stalk on the lower left side of the steering column that controls the cruise control speed and following distance.
  20. Question about using cruise control while towing

Followup question; when using Rivian cruise control in an R2, can one of the scroll wheels be configured to adjust the set speed? I assume that will be the case and that would be very convenient for maintaining safe spacing from the vehicle directly ahead without having to turn off the cruise...
