Interesting. I found that I could navigate YTTV controls via the touchscreen. That being said, it was a bit laggy/buggy and worked better from the phone. I'm on a Google pixel fyi. YouTube (not TV) also was a little finicky for the controls, but great once you got where you needed to be.

I appreciate your taking the time to share a new way to use a recently added feature, especially during the busy holiday season. Whether I end up personally using it or not I don't know, but now the idea is there so I'll be thinking of ways to do so and I'll reply if I come up with any good...
