Rivian Shuts Down All Facilities to Slow Spread of COVID-19 / Coronavirus

Used Model 3 if people are actually selling them yet. Car and Driver certainly seems to like the Bolt. If lower-range isn't completely off the table, Dough Demuro makes a good case for trying to find a used BMW i3. They are sold used at a fraction of what they cost new and they're pretty neat...

    R1 Series Seat Update?

Somehow I know I've read somewhere that this is happening but has anyone seen/heard details?

Possible First Peek at Rivian's Future Rally Model

I'm wondering why the performance of the rally car will be "insane" as RJ put it. Same R1 skateboard but a much lighter and more aerodynamic body? Coming from a guy whose launch vehicles get to 60 in 3 seconds, that's certainly an attention-grabber.

BEV & Battery Wars: Rivian, SDI, GM, Chinese, S. Korean & Global Rivalry

You know, it just occurred to me recently to wonder why Rivian keeps saying it's not at all worried about it's battery supply. Whoever supplies Rivian's skateboard supplies Rivian, ultimately Amazon's entire EV delivery truck fleet, at least one new Lincoln EV, maybe even multiple Ford fleet...

    Bidirectional home chargers

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder if relying near-exclusively on public chargers will take too much of a toll on the battery but I'm renting a condo so don't really have much control over things like adding an EV charger to the property. We have like 3 volta locations with a total of 6 stations...

Wired Magazine Profile: Rivian Wants to Bring Electric Trucks to the Masses

Missed this on the first hasty scan. "And that’s just in the next couple of years. While no timeline has been announced, the firm also plans to make a large SUV for Ford-Lincoln and a small SUV under the Rivian brand." I mean, duh, I guess, but now we know what 2/3 of the new models will be...

    Bed length

https://www.wired.com/story/rivian-race-design-all-electric-pickup-truck/ Maybe just a misprint of the gate-down stat (which is just 6') but... "(The R1T’s bed expands from 4' 11" to 6' 11".) " The article interview probably took place in January or February at the latest.

Wired Magazine Profile: Rivian Wants to Bring Electric Trucks to the Masses

"When you’re talking to customers, he said, you’ll find that one needs the truck bed to be short, to fit in the garage, and another needs it to be long, to haul gear. (The R1T’s bed expands from 4' 11" to 6' 11".) " Uh... That's new, right? 6' with the gate down is the only stat I've seen. If...

Rivian expects some delay & updates with video progress report from Normal plant

It's cool to see how charged they are to get a car factory up and running in Normal again.

    Rivian show the list!

    I'd rather see the configurator.

    Bidirectional home chargers

If a Rivian can charge another Rivian, couldn't you also route the power through an inverter connected to a home?

Rivian Shuts Down All Facilities to Slow Spread of COVID-19 / Coronavirus

I don't think the biggest automotive manufacturing nerd that ever lived would relish the idea of living on site at an automotive plant.

Great way to avoid unions: treat all of your employees, really, really, really well.

BEV & Battery Wars: Rivian, SDI, GM, Chinese, S. Korean & Global Rivalry

It came down to easier city parking and climate controlled EV camping without a tent vs gear tunnel kitchen for me. Gear tunnel kitchen (plus other possibilities) won me over. Also realizing I always wanted a pickup, but it needed to be perfect before I'd consider one.

Economic Reasons to Buy an EV instead of a gas powered car

Ultimately, I think the hours spent argument is hard to push in favor of EVs if you're planning on taking a lot of beyond-local trips with your EV. Refueling times on long trips are a big negative for most. Not so much for me as social distancing was already something I had plenty of practice at...

Gasp... pure touch interfaces aren't what consumers want

I actually don't agree with RJ on that point about physical buttons becoming useless as new features are added. There's no reason you can't have physical UI that can be applied to multiple applications in a generic way. But most of that is already done with steering wheel controls in modern cars.

    Crude Oil

It was environment for me, but I've also kept my last car for 20 years and didn't want to be tied to gas that far out for the next one, because who knows where gas will be in 2040? I think the only thing that might be a bummer is seeing batteries get massive improvement over that time and...

What we might see in that configurator: Options, Launch Edition, etc...

I haven't heard either way but I would guess that they won't. They're not using a proprietary system so there's already lots of third party options. There was a thread about it maybe in the batteries/charging etc. section.

BEV & Battery Wars: Rivian, SDI, GM, Chinese, S. Korean & Global Rivalry

Those Samsung batteries sound pretty ideal. Non-toxic and low-fire risk. Child-labor factor? Didn't see anything about Cobalt but I don't feel so hot about the idea of my super-car/pickup hybrid mid-life crisis being fueled by the tears of prison orphans. Over 1000 charges. Would that mean...
