Given that Canadians have been canceling their USA March break vacations en masse, I would imagine they are also reconsidering what vehicle they purchase. Regardless of costs.
I don't think Rivian needs Canadian sales to survive but if they accounted for 10%, it would definitely hurt.
The...
That's crazy. I had no idea and figured that since it was a Federal Tax, it was applied equally but apparently not. I'm too cheap to pay that. And I was thinking of maybe retiring some day on VI or SSI so good to know.
Same boat for me. Tesla's since 2018 but not my next one. I was recently texted by Tesla about upgrading to a new Model 3 with 0.99% financing.
Response: Not in a million years.
Not that it will be read but I felt better. I'm only 17 months in with my current M3 so I can wait this out and...
Install a toilet in it and you'd be exempt :).
I'd be asking my MP about it. Doesn't seem fair that the province can change the rules of the federal luxury tax simply by virtue of including it the PST.
That's what concerns me. It's actually a Federal Tax that your province has melded into the PST but as a federal tax, the Rivian R1's are excluded.

As a side note...how do you like the EV6? They are a much better value (in comparison to cost in the USA) in Canada than a Rivian would be and given recent price hikes up here, we are now looking at Kia as a possibility. Significant dealer incentives right now on 2024's up here. I'm sure the R2...
Yes, I would have done the same. Though in Ontario, there is no luxury tax on the R1's as they exceed the GVWR threshold and are considered a heavy duty vehicle. It's what has me looking at heavier vehicles in the first place. Though I have owned trucks before.
So here it's just the usual...

The recently announced limited-edition Rivian R1T and R1S California Dune remain at $149,900 and $158,900 respectively and was not affected by the increase.
I'd say this is possible, esp if Rivian doesn't want to be perceived as treating their vehicle prices like stock shares but reminds me a bit of gas (gouge) prices. Very quick to go up if there is some big disturbance but very slow to come back down again.
To put them up this much...well, I can...
The interesting part of this for me at least is that these refresh announcements come on the heels of 2 of their top designers parting with Tesla.
One just announced it on LinkedIn but had actually left in November and the other has left to head up design for Arc Boats...
I've double checked and the Rivian Roamer and Rivian site prices are identical for a few samples I took.
A top of the line Macan Turbo Electric is only $140k up here for comparison. Quite different vehicles but I think I'd much rather have that at $140k than an R1S TRI for $173,900 (less Q1...
I had cross checked them against the Rivian site and they were all accurate. Maybe an anomaly, not sure but that's what I was seeing so am presuming the new ones are accurate as well. I'll check further tonight but really, it doesn't matter much. If you want one, you will pay the price or you...
Also, all the stock that was available up till Monday that I was seeing at least, was showing V1 Powered Tonneau Covers! (including dual motor stock). Now there's a TRI with a V2 cover. Coincidental? I think not.
I had started to make almost the exact same post as OP yesterday but then didn't bother as I figured it affected so few members here. I had done screen shots for what was available in Ontario.
The only Tri I saw was a white R1T IIRC, in Vancouver. It's as if they removed all other Tri's when...
The luxury tax in Ontario doesn't apply to vehicles with a GVWR of over 3,856kg and the R1T comes in just a hair above. So at least there's that. Though a used vehicle would be another way around it for vehicles that are lighter, such as a Porsche.
Tesla increased the pricing on their vehicles...
Yes, I was chatting to someone from Rivian again today and they confirmed definitely not on option in Canada. It's too bad. As an R2 reservation holder, if I was able to lease and then be allowed to cancel without penalty when picking up the R2 (I believe this was an offer in the USA, not sure...
