I agree that this is prevalent and effects many vehicles however, there is a large swath of vehicles that are unaffected and drive great.
Pretty amazing that you have to play the lottery to get an $80k vehicle that doesn't clunk and make noise like a 20 year old used ford.
Yup... this may be 'Normal' for some trucks but the truck i took on a test drive and my friends trucks are dead quiet. Make an appointment for a demo drive, willing to bet $100 that it will be clunk free.
Update: and a sanity check from the group:
I have my car into service (been there two weeks). I created a ticket for the clunk on my front left of my vehicle which I believe I have nailed down to the front driver half shaft having excessive play in the inboard connection. I attached this video...
Yea I don't blame Rivian for the Equinox, it's on Enterprise and to be honest I am not picky when it comes to rental cars... just didn't anticipate I would have it this long.
Root of the issue is poor planning on Rivian's part.
When I made an appointment for Service at the Phoenix service center, the soonest appointment was about 45 days out. Once that date finally arrived I dropped off the car for a number of issues (I believe 7 on the ticket) they said they would need it for 4 to 5 days.
I dropped it off on a...
This is my complaint. Truck has great suspension and will take corners at high speed better than a truck that weighs 7000lbs should... .that being said the front end sounds, and feels like a box of bolts going over speed bumps.
While I tool off the aero guard by the front drive units you can...
Yup, attached it to the service quote. I am sure they will take care of it now… just frustrating that when I first requested them to take a look at specifically the half shafts and demonstrated the clunk when going over bumps they said it was Normal. Again, sure they will sort it now that I had...
With another upcoming appointment in a few weeks I decided to see if I could locate the source of my 'clunk' since the time I asked Rivian to look at it they reported that the clunk was "N"ormal.
The clunk and suspension noise and harsh feel is the result of excessive play in the front driver...
100% agree and sounds like we have the same clunk. It almost sounds like something is flying up in the frunk and hitting the floor up there... but you can also feel it in your feet like it's coming from the drive units or inner suspension components?
What is frustrating is that wen test...
Question for the group, and I will preface all this with the statement that I am not a mechanic or mechanically inclined, just a measly software developer trying to figure out the 'clunk' on my truck...
I jacked up the front end up and checked for play in the half shaft which I could not find...
@tate16t yes it happens independently. When pulling into work every day if I hit the incline at just the right speed when making the turn I can make one side 'pop' / 'clunk'.
Here is a clip of me pulling into my driveway three times in a row hitting the sidewalk bump at 4-5mph. Take a listen to the last low pitched 'thunk' / 'clunk' when the front end is coming down after the upwards suspension event. I can hear it from the lower part of the car, and can feel it in...
Did you ever get with rivian on this? Mine has the exact same sound. Rivian says it's "N"ormal, however I have ridden in 3 of my friends R1s and none of theirs does it... it drives me nuts.
