I schedule my charging session to end when I plan to depart on my trips. (This is very helpful when charging to 100% before a long trip). While a pain to do the math, it is straightforward and the happy byproduct is that the battery is warm as well as the cabin with climate scheduling. The...
I agree... EPA is an "official" number, but generally not representative of "real world". Rivian had to pick something for its base and 2.0 is about as good as any. My lifetime avg. is about 2.2 in all sorts of conditions, speeds, mix of highway/city stop & go.
I am looking forward to the...
I've found traffic is the biggest wildcard to road trip results. However, regarding driving at high speeds (e.g. 80 or 85) actually making trips longer... that has not been my experience. I have found that arriving at DC fast chargers with 5-10% SOC and unplugging at 70% (assuming you can...
There is a learning curve, but it's doable. The trick is in the settings (esp. Reference Consumption and Reference Speed/Max Speed). I have been able to dial it in pretty well, but the Reference Consumption at 65mph bears no relation to my actual efficiency.
On a typical trip (something...
The way Kyle drives is "as fast as safely possible" and he generally ends up arriving sooner even though more charging enroute. If you unplug at 70% and drive faster to the next charger (ideally pulling in as close as you dare to 0%.... I usually arrive with 5-10% SOC), you save time vs...
Jeff - did you change your wheels with the Michelin Platinums? I, too, am on factory 21s (and 2.2 lifetime efficiency). I am not there yet, but wondering about replacements for on the 21 inch wheel. I am leaning toward the michelin defender that fits the 21s. I am curious what efficiency...
I agree, the Tesla membership can save $$$. Also, you can turn it off if there will be a stretch of months where you won’t need it.
It does take an extra step, however. To get the discounted rates, you need to initiate the charge from the Tesla app. Plug & charge is great (and so easy) but...
I doubt many of us (or future Rivian drivers) will push things to the edge like the OOS guys do. Also, I wonder if they had filtered for only 150kW chargers when they had the weird, far out-of-the-way routing to the level 2 Rivian Waypoint charger.
I have only had one weird routing with...
yes... Grizzl-e (canadian mfg) is a great one for outdoor applications. Also, the Tesla universal looks like a smart buy. I have the rivian charger in one location and a grizzl-e in another. They both work very well and there is nothing special about the rivian one.
Yes... the rated range implies 3.14 mi/kWh. I have seen efficiency that high on some legs of a few roadtrips I have taken, but my Gen1 R1S has a lifetime average of 2.2 mi/kWh (all types of driving, all types of temps).
Thank you... your 455 Wh/Mile is ~2.20 Mi/kWh (which is the way Rivian tracks it).
I, too, don't mind the pace of EV road trips. I do a 790 mile trip several times a year. I used to cannonball run it in my ICE days in under 12 hours. Now, it takes about 14 hrs. Living between ~7% and...
What ABRP settings do you use? (Reference consumption @65mph, Max Speed, and Reference speed %). With my R1S on 21s, I currently use 2.60, 83 mph, and 110%. This is generally slightly conservative, but I am curious what others use & how they find it.
Depending on my first leg (how far to...
The Version 4 tesla dispensers with the longer cables are really nice. They fit a Rivian with out taking up 2 spaces. But, with all the changes there, who knows how fast they will be rolled out.
