So there aren't any huge objections to Safelite doing the windshield repair?

Oh, I think you misunderstood. I went with the Rivian SC and OEM glass. Many of our local SafeLite offices couldn’t handle the ADAS calibration. They also offered a single tech to do this at my house (without a glass lift or a second tech to help with the heavy and awkward windshield. Safelite inspected my larger than a quarter, deep spider crack/chip for a $200 repair - the insurance company pushed for since once SafeLite touches the glass they are then responsible for full replacement if it breaks in the process. SafeLite said they’d likely crack it all the way while attempting the repair and they didn’t plan to keep the vehicle indoors overnight while the sealant dried. No go from what I’ve read and talked about with the folks at Rivian SC and the Rivian certified collision center.

We've had our windshield replaced once on our R1T. Work truck kicked up a rock. For those who says the windshields are fragile, that has not been our experience. It has took a beating and we haven't any any other issues.

Regarding replacement, Rivian told us to go to a Rivian certified auto body shop and they replaced it with with OEM glass. They then took it to the SC for the calibration. We had glass coverage, so it didn't cost us anything. You can also go to the SC, but at the time Rivian wouldn't process the claim. We had to pay them and then seek reimbursement. This was also when wait times to get into a SC were 3mo, so things may have changed a bit.

Since I went to a Rivian Service center I had to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed. I probably saw/heard about 4-5 rock impact that I thought were going to be stars. The final one was a large star and was directly in my eyeline. I had it repaired but the sun kept glinting and annoying me.

Thanks, that's good info. I just heard back from my insurance company and it looks like they received the quote from Safelite on the back end and told me that it was close enough to Rivian quote that I could just have Rivian do everything.

This is my third impact that has caused crack, but the other two, I've lived with for about a year since they were really low on the windshield and they didn't bother me that much.

I went ahead and purchased the twraps windshield protective film. I'm going to try that this time around, does anybody have any thoughts/experience on that?

I was about to order TWraps for my windshield when it caught a rock from a passing dump truck. Ugh!!!! Deep crack in front of driver seat, a little to the center.

I waited a couple months before getting things scheduled at the SC and I ordered both the windshield and rear glass TWraps PPF. The installed the rear glass first (less expensive and not needed but it was a good training sheet since I’d never installed any kind of PPF before on any vehicle).

Installation was very smooth. The gap is a little more on the back glass than on the windshield. I watched the TWraps installation video multiple times before and during installation. Follow the instructions. Use lots of soapy water. Be prepared to lift the film multiple times and be sure to soap it up again and again.

I was surprised I still had a couple small dust specks under the film when I was done but they were low in the center and one under the visible line so no issue at all.

I’m super happy with the installation and the very slight blue hue isn’t an issue for me but I see the difference. I ordered the film for the roof too and still need to install it. I ordered front window tint too at the lowest reduction level since I live in VA and can’t tint those windows much beyond the factory tint level.

I definitely recommend using the TWraps glass PPF for the impact protection along with the UVA, UVB, and IR reduction properties.
