The adventure angle was a way to create a brand. I don't believe most people care about that component in a vehicle.I am honestly starting to question whether there will even be demand for that amount of output each year. Rivian will need the $45k R2 variant, but with 275mile range that likely will be another cherry picked EPA result. While Tesla offers Model Y Prem RWD at $46k with 357mile range, that delivers more than that at highway speeds. How many customers are there for an "Adventure" vehicle that is RWD and has little range?
The EV market is a small subset of the US auto market. Tesla has the mindshare of that small subset, Unfortunately.
For me and many others, the SUV form factor, the superior interior, and not being a raised sedan like the Y, is the reason to get an R2.
Rivian needs to expand internationally and get moving on R3 as a cost effective variant, if possible.
My suspicion is the battery cost makes a more affordable EV not possible, regardless of what we hear in the media.
