I just bought a new to me 2022 Launch edition R1T with just under 20k miles. The warranty is good through July of 2027.
I'd like the Xcare extended warranty, and I know that the price goes up after 20k miles. My question is should I wait until the warranty is getting close to expiring or can I purchase it to take over AFTER it expires? If I purchase it now, I lose that year of coverage since the factory warranty covers it, right? What should I do?
Thank You.

I hate these warranties that advertise a coverage period where a large part of it just overlays with the factory warranty.

Also beware of the warranty term that won’t pay out for cumulative repair work above what they deem the vehicle’s current fair market value - especially on quickly depreciating but expensive to repair vehicles.

Wait till you hit 40k, then look at options…

That would be in a couple of years and I don't want it to be out of warranty. Thanks for the info.

It seems based on miles not so much years with bumps at artificial setpoints every 10k. Just play around with their quote tool for 19, 39, 59k. See how much non-overlapping coverage you get for what cost and decide. Same with deductible, I saw a jump in premium from $500 to 100, smaller jump to 0. You can also send them an email, Cary was very helpful.

I’m considering this. It looks like the warranty is transferable so it could be a sweetener if selling your truck privately.

My truck just hit 51k miles and got a warranty replaced new suspension last month at 49,700 miles (standard plus battery)… no more comprehensive warranty for me it ended at 50k miles.

$5,000 and change gets me another 2 years and extends coverage to 101k miles. The way dampers, zone controllers and half shafts are prone to fail on gen 1’s it may be worth it.

I'd take your $6k for warranty "maybe" paying off and put it instead into the S&P 500.
Worst case, you have to take it back out to pay for a repair.
Best case, you make money.

'Investing' it into an extended warranty and that money is gone gone gone.

The biggest concern owners have these days are with respect to dampers.
Which aren't inexpensive.
But.
These exclusionary warranties won't cover your dampers until they're completely dead (riding on bump stops). And I haven't seen anyone reporting THAT. I've seen leakage failures aplenty to be concerned. But at that point, your warranty won't cover it anyway.

The only other possible potential big ticket items are going to be your battery, which is covered by the powertrain warranty (Gen1 Quads that's 8 years, 175k).

So, this isn't financial advice, but we've been digging and the more we've looked into it, the less logical it seems to me to put money into an extended warranty that could just as well not pay off (and likely won't. Afterall, if it paid off for the majority, that company would be losing money: they know what they're doing).

Just my unsolicited .02.

Point taken... but I have a few reasons that make me give it consideration.
If I look at the service history while it was fully covered by warranty, I realize my Gen1 R1T is essentially a land rover. It has been in service so many times - HVAC leaking x3, failed rear zone controller x2, half shafts x2, tonneau cover failure x 3, all 4 dampers and the hydraulic two weeks ago, 300 miles before my comprehensive warranty expired.

There is a big part of me that wants to drive it straight to Carmax and never get another Rivian. But - I like the car. When its working, its a great truck for me.

Here is why I give XCare a second look:

1) Its optionally transferrable with the car. If I decide to sell it, especially in a private sale it would have a bumper to bumper coverage past 100k miles that can last another 2-3 years depending on the package. Knowing what we all know, that is the ONLY reason anybody should consider getting a used gen 1.

2) If I decide I don't want the warranty or wreck the car a few months in, Xcare offers a pro-rated refund on the unused term of the warranty.

I'm not 100% sold yet on it, but right now, its looking like the easiest path forward.
$5k and keep my truck another year or so or trade in and spend another $50k ish on a new truck.

Here's what I am thinking, I'm going to schedule a Comprehensive evaluation with Rivan prior to my 4 years / 50,000 miles, I wont get to the milage side of that so My warranty will expire approx. 5/2028, so I'll target about 6 months before that. Have them fix anything they find, if anything, while still under warranty, then evaluate what the xcare extended warranty cost would be and my my decision then. I am not concerned about the battery at all, more worried about suspension issue.
