Rivian apparantly thinks that encoders on stepper motors are a luxury too expensive to use. So things that "adjust themselves" tend to lose position coordination between software and hardware and do this crap. Such a terrible decision, but not out of character for a company that is so software...

This is what I do. Hold the brake, apply throttle, release brake to modulate position. Practice away from the trailer until you get a feel for it. Quite fine control using this method.
