I ordered my R1T QM Large Pack with 21s and I really need to switch to 20s for all the reasons. My heartburn is the ability to explore SE of Tucson

So, as it is, there is one lone charger in Benson that is a dumpster fire, already. Most of the trip planning I do with my 21s leaves little wiggle room with only 1 charger in the area.

My question is whether people in Tucson are still able to explore that corner of AZ with the range hit from having 20s? I'm trying to plan a hike out north of Benson and I already have to charge to near 100% in Benson just to make it happen and I'm worried if I switch to 20s I won't really have the range required to go adventuring down in the SE corner of the state.

Have you searched in Plugshare for all of your options? I see a few, particularly if you include RV parks which aren't super fast of course, but can give you about 20 MPH. And what's the range difference with tire/wheel changes?
cjbot3000
cjbot3000
@SwampNut I'm looking at fast charging because we go Backcountry camping

The range difference is really my biggest question, with the secondary question of "does it matter in this specific area"

Officially it's 40 miles hit, but my understanding is that the estimate is overstated so I'm curious about real world use cases south and South East of Benson and North of welcome Willcox

@cjbot3000 I think the odds of finding another Rivian in your area are really low. The odds of finding one doing the same activities as you is probably zero. I think you're going to have to extrapolate info and make your own plans. I have done a lot of off roading all around Tucson and a bit East, and there are so many ways to do that, there's no way to compare. I've seen people who think I was doing "insane" off-roading and then others who were doing far more aggressive wheeling and/or staying out for days/weeks. There was no way to compare our experiences.

@SwampNut that... Surprises me. I see sooooooo many Rivs around Tucson with the AT set up! Would be a shame if they only see Costco...
So I was reading a comment in response to the Rivian layoffs and the member said they got a free charger when they received their Rivian.. did anyone else? Got my R1S in August 23 but no mention of a free home charger.

No, it came with a free portable charger, but not a free Level 2 {home) charger. The Level 2 charger is an extra cost accessory you can buy from Rivian (or many other companies). If someone actually received a free Level 2 charger, it might have been a special circumstance where it was comped in lieu of or because of something.

I got one with my R1T bought in December. It was a 2023 year end promo. Don’t remember when it started, think it was the 4th qtr.

@Gcan Yeah, they'll probably continue to offer upgrades or other perks to boost sales at end-of-quarter, or other times. I think that Rivian is (or was) offering PPF now, as an incentive.
But a free home charger isn't one of the standard amenities (which is why the OP didn't get one last August).

I have a set of new (10 minutes on our R1S) Rivian cross bars for sale with keys. Located in Gilbert. Here is the original thread in the for sale section.

No longer need the tri-fold tonneau cover I got for my R1T while awaiting the power tonneau replacement. Can anyone use it? In the East Valley. Free to a good home.

I had the DCE R1S rock sliders installed today. Very happy and impressed so far. R1T sliders are en route as well.

If anyone is looking for an installer, I had a great experience with River Outdoors in Phoenix. Great guys. Very knowledgeable and skilled. Cool little shop for outdoor gear.

Installation was $210 and they were done 2-1/2 hours after I dropped it off.

Thanks. Good eye. Matte PPF on the red and clear PPF on the black trim and lights. Glossy black PPF (as opposed to vinyl) was used on the brushed sliver window trim, rear bumper accent, and skid plate looking thing that's not really a skid plate. There's ceramic on top of the matte PPF, which I think makes it look satin.

Will be shipping the R1S to Hawaii by the end of 2023, but I'll still have my R1T in Phoenix.

Thanks. I just joined! I suggest adding Distinct Detail to your list of recommended PPF/Tint vendors. Also, consider a Rivian entry for the Electric Light Parade on 12/2/2023. I've been in it in the past with my old Teslas. A bunch of Rivians would be awesome:

Received R1S on 6/30. White, Adventure, Quad Motor, black interior, 20” black wheels. Ordered 9/21.Great truck so far!

I've had my R1T since March. It is Glacier White, Adventure, Quad motor (of course), with black ash interior. It has RUS, 20" wheels, and (broken) PTC. I installed a DIY manual tonneau, to get me by until RJ Scaringe finally decides to install my replacement PTC. I installed upgraded charging pads, and have EV Sportline sliders on order. So far, there haven't been any major issues (other than the broken PTC and no spare tire). Maybe I should just call it the RJTC (RJ Tonneau Cover).
Timbuk2000
Does anyone have a recommendation of an installer for RMaxx Running Boards with Rock Slider Armor in Phoenix? These are currently backordered on EV Sportline.
Hello all -- Excited to see this group forming, and looking forward to the meetup coming up in late September. I just bought my new (to me) 2023 R1T with 20" AT wheels... Took it up four peaks and then over to BullDog Canyon along the lower salt river recently. Looking for some other places to go before I just give in to the AZ Pinstriping that i'm avoiding as long as possible.

I'm pretty central, 44th & Camelback and would love to go offroading with some other Rivians... Weekdays (preferred) and weekends work for me. Just getting concerned because every time i've gone, I go with just my and my passengers and don't see anyone else along the trail and I don't have a spare yet -- So just concerned about what could go wrong!

Looking forward to getting more involved... Loving my Rivian over my two Teslas that we currently own as well!

The car show schedule is picking back up but I would like to go offroading as well. I am up north off carefree.

Carefree area is where I was planning on exploring next. Assuming you’re looking for trails to avoid pinstripes like me. Seems like a few good ones up by you. Let me know if you want to connect soon!

There’s a nice trail from I-17/Bloody Basin to “Sheep’s Bridge”, then you can return through Carefree.

Grab some breakfast at Rock Springs Cafe on the way up to the trail.

@ScottnAZ Thanks! Been checking that trail out and actually hoped to do it yesterday but didn't make it.

Anyone drive from Phx/Scottsdale up to Fossil Creek yet? Given the 17 miles of tough road I want to take the Riv but being new to EV and no chargers near Camp Verde I'm a little nervous. Especially since we all know 1 accident on the 17 and you could be sitting in the 17 parking lot for an hour or 2.

"we all know 1 accident on the 17 and you could be sitting in the 17 parking lot for an hour or 2."
Among the great benefits of an EV is the high efficiency when traveling slowly, and the fact that it doesn't use all that much energy while stuck in traffic, even while running the A/C.

Trip to fossil creek was easy and successful! There and back without having to stop to charge and took the bumpy gravel road like a champ.

There is some traction in the AZ Club, which is fantastic. If you get a meet with 15 R1's in attendance, I'll gladly donate a set of our Rivian Yellow Magnetic Jack Pucks for a raffle (kit pictured below). I've done this with a few clubs across the US and Canada. Can do a tire change demo (roadside repair demo), if there is interest.

Unfortunately a few of us including myself have been asked by the City of Phoenix to participate in the Phoenix Drive Electric Week event on that date. We will not be able to attend this meetup.

I met with Rivian Clubs of America (Rivianclubs.org) yesterday in an effort to create an Arizona chapter. This is an effort to create a central unified platform for Rivian owners. They are recognized by Rivian and included in company events. Would anyone be interested in joining the group?
Is there any interest in arranging a meetup this summer? We could meet for lunch or something inside.
I am also a member of the Scottsdale EV association and they have included us in their upcoming event to Flagstaff. Invite can be found under events. If enough Rivians want to go we can plan our route through Sedona.

Hello!
I pick up my R1S the week of August 21st and can't wait! Based on the recent weather we have had I was wondering what people's recommendations are for tint?
  • Has anyone done any before and after analysis?
  • What tint did you go with?
  • Did you do the roof?
  • Did you do all side and back windows?
  • Did anyone do the front windshield?
Any other specific Tips and Tricks you have would be greatly appreciated!!

I look forward to a Fall Rivian Group Trip!

I went with Llumar IRX 50 for all the doors glass and Llumar air 80 for the windshield and back window, the sunroof I bought the abstract ocean cover, it makes a huge difference in cabin temp, at least 30 degrees.

Photosync 30 on all glass. If you wear polarized sunglasses do 3M on windshield so you won’t see prism effect. I used cactus tint on raintree in scottsdale right across street from Tesla service center. But my R1S still get brutally hot when parked in sun. I REALLY hope service center can fix the AC. it’s my biggest complaint about the vehicle now that I use stiff suspension in all purpose mode to suppress the bouncy ride.

I went with Stek Nex tint from Distinct Detail. Best tint on the market for blocking up to 98% of infrared light and 99% of UV rays.
https://www.stek-usa.com/window-tint/nexseries/
I had all of the glass tinted. Windows, roof and windshield. Huge improvement in temperature.

Took delivery of my R1S from the R1S Shop this afternoon. Launch Edition Green with Ocean Coast Interior. Originally wanted Limestone to go with my R1T, but couldn't pass up the LE with 20 inch tires.

The tires make the drives very different. Haven't driven the R1S on the highway yet--waiting for PPF. But on street surfaces, there is a noticeable difference. That said, I grin just as widely driving the R1S as I have the R1T.

Just picked an R1S from the shop

Pre-order 12/21 - was going for the LS / FE but decided to go FG / FE after looking at the LS several times

I finally got to charge at a RAN - the one in Village of Oak Creek (just south of Sedona). There are six RAN chargers, near the Tesla Superchargers. Note that the Rivian mapping program repeatedly sent me to the apartment complex next door (no way to get to the chargers from there). The chargers are actually behind a small shopping center called "The Collective Sedona."
There are bathrooms, which have a key-code lock - but no code was necessary when we tried them. The lady in the ice cream shop said that if it required a code, it would be 723. They seemed fairly nice and clean.
Note: none of the chargers were pull-through, but if it isn't too busy one would probably be able to charge with a trailer still connected, without obstructing traffic or blocking chargers.
P.S. Still free charging!

Hey All,

I will put this in the market place, but I am thinking of getting rid of my 21 tires and going to 20's. Anyone interested in buying individual spare 21's? It will be a month or two before I pull the trigger. 2 front tires are brand new, rear 2 have 11,500 on them but I think they have decent tread

I have thought about doing the same thing. Tire life seems to be about the same. Maybe a difference in range. Had mine powder coated satin black. Hate to start over but I will need new tires soon anyway.

Hi all! Just picked up my riv Friday. The air in the second row hardly blows and my kids are melting. Is this really as hard as this blows (yes she said that)? Our summer is too long to tolerate this. I will pre chill the cabin every time but still. Any ideas? Didn’t find anything online.

A roof sunshade and tint help a lot. I think 70%, which is nearly clear, makes a big difference.

I rarely have rear seat passengers so I unfortunately can’t say much about fan speed and comfort back there.

I have only seen roof sunshades that fit the R1T. Any rec for R1S?

I didn't drive the truck much before the ppf and tint were installed. Haven't had any complaints from the rear passengers. I drove a loaner r1t a few weeks ago. There was a very noticeable heat difference compared to my truck.

The group is growing. There are hundreds of Rivians in Arizona according to the service center. Let's see how many members we can get.
Is there any interest in scheduling a meetup and/or road trip?

I’d be up for it, but maybe in the Fall once this nasty heat finally eases.

I’ve done a few trails locally that could be fun for Rivian outings. Search my posts under Trip Reports.

Towards the holidays, I’ve put my old Tesla’s in the Electric Light Parade. Maybe could do a Rivian entry this year? That’s usually the first weekend in December.

I agree. Weather permitting.

RAN open in Sedona! Definitely worth a drive up! It's nice because it's actually in Oak Creek in The Collective shops, so before you hit any of the actual Sedona traffic if your coming in off I-17

Gilbert to RAN I used 70% battery

Charged 30%-80% in about 30 minutes (kids used the time for restrooms on site, I aired down tires)

Did Broken Arrow Trail, back to RAN with 72% charge!

Only took 50% charge coming back to Gilbert (coming down the mountain is much more efficient)

Awesome news RE RAN in Sedona. How much is Rivian charging (cost)?
zymolysis
zymolysis
@HockeyDad So far it is free (although I haven't yet had the opportunity to charge at one). Rivian has declined to state when they will start charging, or what the cost will be. I expect Rivian to start charging at RANs sometime in the next few months.

It is free (for now). I've charged at the Sedona RAN 3 times already. - I live about 30 minutes west. Good location; plenty of facilities during business hours. I'm not sure if the restrooms are 24/7, but I would think that they would be since there is a Tesla Supercharger at this same parking lot.

State 48! Reserved my R1T Dec, 8, 2018 and have had it for 18 months and 30,000 miles. Excellent news on Sedona as we MTB there as often as possible. Haven't four wheeled it there, but looking forward to it.

I'm a forum sponsor, so if anyone needs our magnetic jack pucks, I'll take care of locals.
