Has anyone in the group installed running boards.. and have opinions on which brand/implementation you chose to go with?

I wonder if they will offer a steering-wheel-ectomy after the R2 is released for R1 owners who want the new scroll wheels. Certainly don’t need to do it… but wouldn’t that be nice

Just scheduled a 7500 mile maintenance service (I’m over the miles, but this wasn’t offered till recently). I chose the mobile service option, so they will be coming to my house. Will be my first time doing this.

Anyone have questions they want me to be sure to ask or anything I should document?

Has anyone done the mobile service here yet?

I used conserve on my big 4500 mile road trip, but I stick to “All Purpose” for the most part. I pop it into “Conserve” when I forget to plug it in and need to squeeze a bit more out (still trying to get in a better charging habit).

I had the tires rotated at Discount Tire just before my big road trip… so will be interested to see the state of my wear.

I've done the mobile service for tire rotation. I was fine but honestly the Discount Tire route is ultimately easier and cheaper. It took them quite a long time to rotate the tires so I'll just do Discount Tire from now on. I got 35k miles on my first set of 21" road tires with a lot of driving in conserve mode.

7500 mobile service and tire rotation complete. He was a man of few words… wish he had walked me through what all he checked and such… but I got the “looks good, no issues” a few times.

Additional information:
- He texted an hour before showing up to give me an ETA (I had a 10-2 window)
- Texted when arrived. I gave him the key and went back in to work
- Checked on him once when i saw the tires off so i could get a close look at the brakes and inside workings (forgot to take a picture)
- Texted when he was complete and packing up his gear
- Asked about payment and he said that I would do that through the app? Guess it will get auto-billed sometime later?

If i notice anything after i take it for a drive, I’ll come back and note it.

Yeah, I’ve been aware of this “new” station in the EA app since before I took possession of my R1T in April 2023 - Coming soon MY ASS!!!

Great news. Now we just need something in Duluth.

Yeah… I’ve heard about one being put in Duluth for just as long. Anyone know if its a reality yet?

@ThumprMN idk on Plug Share it seems the EA people haven't been helpful to answering when...
Delano here, just picked up my R1T on 3.23.24, bought a demo from the demo shop. 2022 R1T quad, Canyon Red, black interior, power tonneau, and just shy of 9000 miles. Guide said the first demo delivered out of the TC Service Center. Tonneau is disabled open though and service center said now once its disabled it cannot be re-enable so who knows if it actually broke or just out of caution. Any one getting replacements here? How long did you wait?

ThumprMN
Hmm… I had not heard of them disabling the tonneau covers, but that makes some sense as a demo vehicle, but I suspect you’ll have to wait in line to get the replacement. Make sure you let your Guide know. I personally took delivery during the period where they did NOT equip the truck with one… and I have been hounding then to let me retrofit mine once they get through the backlog of warranty fixes. I’m patient tho, so I’m not making a big deal yet.
Tullyweeds
@ThumprMN Put in for a service ticket before leaving the service center with it. Got a call yesterday from Rivian to let me know I am on the list to be fixed but they could not give me any time frame on when I can get it fixed. I asked if I should expect weeks or months, and they said expect months most likely.
Budman
Budman
I would opt for the Interrobang manual tonneau. Info can be found on this forum.

Just got a call to get my tonneau fixed, said parts will be in by end of May so schedule a time for service on June 3rd.
ThumprMN
Doesn’t look like there is much interest in the upcoming event for April 13th. Thinking about canceling it if I’m the only one showing up.

Open to ideas for what kind of meet-ups folks are interested in. Parks? Trails? Charging location destinations? Family Friendly picnic + kite flying? Drag racing? 🤪

Do you want to just meet up for beverages sometime?
Lawrence-of-Blaine
I think with the current lack of interest, the Franconia meet-up should be cancelled, but let's give it a few more days. I posted on the main forum for newbies to join this group. Let's see if we can get a few more interested.
Tullyweeds
If I wasn't right in the middle of packing for a move at the end of April I would have been open to meeting up.

I'm not on Discord. Should I be?
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Not sure I can answer that for you. Just something I set up for this club. I don’t personally use Facebook or WhatsApp, so I chose to set up a Discord chat server. Purely optional for those that wish to use it.
ThumprMN
Looks like we are in for a warm early spring. Anyone up for a little meet up? Open to ideas, but I’ve been thinking about visiting Franconia Sculpture Park near Taylors Falls. There is also the Saint Croix National scenic Riverway area (tho it might be the wrong time of year)

Well, that was interesting. Driving home from a store, going 60mph, and the radio cuts out seconds before both the driver screen and center screen go blank. The Rivian symbol comes up on the driver display and the speed indicator comes up showing my speed… but I have nothing else. I contemplated pulling all the way over quick, but I sit in the right hand lane ready to pull off but driving functions seem unaffected in the moment. Screens slowly seem to blink and refresh and stuff starts coming back up on the display. Center console seems to come back after the driver display.

Got home fine, but that was disconcerting.

Is this similar to the issue you experienced on your trip out west?
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Not exactly… during my trip, the screens just wouldn’t give me any accurate battery info. This was everything going blank in the middle of driving as if a system reset had happened. I wasn’t doing anything to reset it, just driving along.

I half expected the vehicle to be non responsive and start slowing down…. But within seconds I realized that it was still responding to my pedal inputs, I just had no information except speed.

To be clear, I didn’t even have speed till it seemed to blink a few times. Everything else took longer to come back online by the time I got home.

My 1969 Chevy Caprice did that. Everything blacked out. Oh, wait, that was me driving home after a big party.
I sure hope this is one-time system re-set. finding a wiring short would be a bummer.
I'm glad it turned out OK for driving.
ThumprMN
Anyone interested in a winter MN Rivian meetup soon? Could do another “Hot Cocoa and Electrons” hang out. (I’d bring my hot water kettle to plug in and cocoa mix to share).

Plus: I picked up some Rivian themed coloring pages the last time I was in the Service center for kids to have (and kids at heart). Was planning on making photo copies to hand out.

Thoughts?

I’ve got time and would love to do it. Ideas for date/time?
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
I’m open… are there any charger locations you’ve wanted to check out? Or a park/point if interest you think would be fun to see that could accommodate a group of Rivian?
Lawrence-of-Blaine
@ThumprMN having only had my R1S for a couple months, I’ve never charged anywhere but home. So, anywhere will be a new experience for me. Prefer north side of metro though.
ThumprMN
Two weeks and 4600 miles later, I’m back home and learned a lot about driving the Rivian cross country on this road trip.
Overall, it was a GREAT vehicle to road trip, it’s the charging infrastructure that’s the limiting factor (Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota… looking at you). Additionally, I found that the Rivian underestimated its range when it came to route planning. Several times I had to override the navigation and use other apps to get to the next location.
Inevitably, when I was 2/3 of the way there, the Rivian would finally agree with my plotted course and tell me I’d make it… but I was pretty much flying blind. Example: the distance to my next charge would be 180miles, and Rivian navigation would tell me unneeded to stop at a lvl 2 charger for 1.5 hours) to make it there even if I had 300+ miles in the battery pack.

Welcome back. That has been my experience as well with the range estimate. The one behind the steering wheel seems better. I usually look at the recent efficiency and do some math in my head to get the number I really trust.
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Yeah, I took that number, reviewed efficiency, checked the elevation change for the next leg, looked at the forecast/wind speed & direction and did my own math too.

It was just frustrating seeing how dramatically different the route planning on the Rivian was compared to real life result. I always made it with range to spare… sometimes significant range to spare. The only stretch they had me worried was Chamberlain SD to Worthington Minnesota along the I-90 route. Sioux Falls really needs to get a 150+ lvl 3 charger up and running. I made it without stopping there, but it was close. I charged to 90% in Chamberlain and arrived in Worthington with 39miles left. If it had been any windier, or colder (40’s) I suspect I would not have been able to make it. Sioux Falls only has 50kw chargers at best for non-Tesla owners.
ThumprMN
On the start of a big 3500+ mile road trip around the west/mountains. Am I stupid, I can’t find the internal cabin temp except going into the app on my phone. The temp on the middle screen shows the external temp, but I can’t see internal temp… just what I want to set the HVAC to heat/cool to. Am I missing the obvious?

Made it to the Denver Service Center… they are doing a 12v disconnect to see if that will fix the issue.
Budman
Budman
Congratulations, I guess.

Best of luck.

How did charging work with the truck in that condition? How many miles did you have to drive to get to Denver?
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Forgot to mention that the 12v restart worked. Got my screens back and back to normal.

The charging was decent and technically the only thing that worked to tell me what my charge was when the battery info wasn’t working.
ThumprMN
Just had a very pleasant visit to the service center: 1- Evacuate and recharge refrigerant due to overfill and 2- Replace auxiliary air compressor control panel. Had to schedule this back a few months to get an appointment, but dropped off at 8:45am and they were done by 12:30. Very quick. Got some Rideshsre credits to use for them day to get back and forth.

Overall a very good experience. I do live nearby, but the SC made this easy. Even called me a few days before to ensure I remembered, knew what to bring and was prepared.

Also adding some photos of the “In-Service” view from the app in case anyone wonders.

My R1S has been there a week so far. Just some trim and alignment stuff from when it was delivered on 9/30. I'm in a Durango right now and it feels like I've gone back in time. I just want it back so bad lol. I sure hope it's done today or tomorrow. He told me 7-10 days. Sounds like they have really already outgrown the space as well.
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Oh… I know that feeling. They had to keep mine this summer when the “Hold” setting was causing a pigsnort sound when driving. Had some Camry and I was so frustrated with it. Also almost got in a wreck cause I forgot about how ICE cars just roll with no regen braking.
NoDakEric
I took delivery of my Canyon Red R1T on Thursday. Very exciting after 4.5 years of waiting. Max Pack with manual tonneau cover (on backorder). I need to log some miles to get a feel for it. I could have towed my boat to northern Wisconsin for storage on Friday, but didn't dare undertake that on the inaugural drive (no charging stations for 180 miles). hopefully next year.

anyone wanna buy an I-Pace??? : -)

Ive always wondered what they are like… before you sell it, would you be interested in letting me check it out? Maybe a small meetup for the MN Rivian group and checking out the ipace can be the “theme” of the hangout?

I'm definitely open to letting folks see and drive it. I'm out of town this weekend, but will ber around again starting next week.

Went out for a final bike ride of the season. Got to use the Rivian tailgate bike pad. Works fairly well. This was my regular 2-wheel bike and my friend’s Lectrek trike. It took a little more effort to lift into the bed, but strapped down the same and stayed secure as we drove on the highway. Had a nice 20 mile ride from Hastings to Spring Lake Park Reserve. Was a perfect day for it, and a decent trail.

For those interested, I have created a small event to meet up at the new EA charge station open at the Eagen Outlet Mall. I’m open to ideas for where we could meet up for a future event in another part of the state. Just thought a Hot cocoa and Charging meet up might be fun on Saturday Nov 4th. Check out details in the “events” tab for exact address/location (back parking surface lot, not in the ramp).

Not sure many will be showing up today, but I’ll see those that do @2pm in the surface parking lot of the new EA chargers at the Twin Cities Outlet Mall (Eagen MN). I got the packets of Hot Cocoa ready (and a few alternatives), a hot water kettle, and the water ready to go. Just bring your own mug/cup.

Also, I just got the Rivian Tailgate Bike pad if anyone wants to see it in person.
ThumprMN
ThumprMN
Well, that’s a very busy parking lot on a weekend and not easy to maneuver in and out of. Seemed like lots of EV’s stopping to charge. I was sandwiched between two Lucids. I also gave the stink eye to a Tesla owner who sat on a charging spot who clearly wouldn’t be able to charge CCS.
ThumprMN
I’m curious what everyone’s wheel/tire choice was considering we live in Minnesota (“Winter is real, Yo”). I preferred going with road efficiency over off road capability, and thought taking the aero inserts out gave me a 2 look wheel option over getting the 22’s. Never had a drivetrain quite like this + weight… so will see how snow driving behaves compared to trucks/vehicles I’ve had in there past.

This will be my first winter with the Rivian. Intrigued to see how it fairs in the snow, keeping warm, de-icing.. etc. I keep it in the garage at home, but I bought one of those windshield snow covers for when I have to park outside or roadtrips in winter.

Don't try to bust through drifts, the flat underside acts like a sled and rides up on the snow. Put it in off-road first, because once you are high centered the computer doesn't know why the suspension is extended. Took me 2 times getting stuck to figure that out. After getting pulled out had to do a hard reset each time to get the suspension back in alignment
