as long as it's not doggos we're ok.

I have enjoyed the horror to the idea people have expressed. It's like me watching a movie. Kill dozen's of humans? Meh. Dog dies? Oof. People gonna pay.

Yep. I think its the innocence and blind loyalty shown by dogs. I feel the same way

Mine are too big for both of them to fit in there at the same time. Can't let 1 ride in there, the other would be jealous.

Actually, I don't think either of them would want to ride in the gear tunnel if it was full of cat(s).

What is the length of the tunnel with the doors closed?

“When the 2022 Rivian R1T electric pickup truck made its debut, it impressed us with its design, range, and capability. Besides looking quite different from any pickup truck on the market today, the Rivian R1T has a ton of storage space provided by its 4.5-foot bed, its frunk, its in-bed trunk, and its gear tunnel. The latter storage compartment is located under the rear seat and accessible from small drop-down panels located between the rear doors and the rear wheels on either side of the bed. During our recent Trans-America Trail (TAT) road trip with the 2022 Rivian R1T, we had ample time to see how much stuff actually fits into the gear tunnel, and—spoiler alert—we discovered it's a hugely beneficial feature.

What Can You Fit in the Rivian R1T's Gear Tunnel?

The answer as to what fits in the tunnel is: a bunch of whatever you like. The Rivian R1T's gear-tunnel volume is 11.6 cubic feet, or 0.6 cubic foot more than the R1T's frunk. On our (TAT) adventure, we fit a couple of carry-on sized suitcases, a couple of duffle bags, a backpack, and a briefcase in the tunnel all at the same time. The gear tunnel is deep, and if you're good with Tetris you can fit even more stuff than you think, especially if you have items you can fold, bend, or squeeze. The storage space was designed to fit golf bags, skis, snowboards, or collapsed strollers, but feel free to stash your umbrellas, fishing poles, or other similarly sized and shaped items. It also has a pair of 12-volt outlets, one at each end, for powering various accessories, but you'll likely need to use an inverter. We'd love to see 110-volt outlets added here at some point.

How Do You Access the Gear Tunnel?

The lateral doors open via buttons located on the side of the bed, or via the infotainment system. In addition, a small rear-seat pass-through allows access the tunnel from the cab, though you'll only be able to slide your arm through it—so plan your tunnel packing accordingly. The two lateral doors can hold up to 300 pounds each, which means you can use them as a seat during tailgate events or camping trips.

What About the Cool Camp Kitchen?

For $5,000, buyers can outfit their 2022 Rivian R1T's gear tunnel with one of the coolest factory options we've seen in a while: a camp kitchen that includes a two-burner electric cooktop, a countertop, a 4-gallon water tank for the sink, and a 30-piece dishware set that includes plates, utensils, knifes, and more. The camp kitchen turned out to be of great use during our trip; from tacos to breakfast sandwiches, we cooked all kinds of food with it, and it was easy to use and store. A full review of this feature is coming soon.
Finally, Rivian also offers a gear-tunnel "shuttle" for the 2022 R1T, which is basically a slide-out tray/table that extends from the passenger side by up to 6 feet. It boasts a 200-pound weight capacity and has 110-volt outlet and 12-volt outlets, and once stowed leaves enough room to place more items on top, something you can't do with the camp kitchen.”
Can the "Camp Kitchen" be removed and stored when you don't need it giving back the Gear Tunnel?

Yes, but the gear shuttle stays in.

Yes, but the gear shuttle stays in.
So, looks like you could not borrow someone else's camp kitchen unless you already have a gear shuttle.

Hadn’t thought of that but yes.

Great idea! Rent out the camp kitchen when not in use to recoup some of that 5k. What would people pay for a rental? $200 a week, 1 week minimum?

Cost of the kitchen is $3,500 if you back out the shuttle cost, but that should work in many markets. Maybe even something Rivian should offer thru their stores? Many people will likely only use it a couple of times a year - if they find they use it more, then they can buy...

A rental program might be a great way to increase adoption, and conversion to sales.

Seems the quality of the camp kitchen needs an upgrade.

Anyone else concerned about carpet on the gear tunnel wells if you're tossing wet muddy gear in there? Sounds like a recipe for some stank and making it more difficult to clean than a hard interior.
Hopefully WeatherTech will design a mat that fits nicely into the gear tunnel.

I was thinking about another accessory for the gear tunnel. What do you think of an open top bin that slides out (likey on the gear shuttle)? Slide it out, drop in your skis and snowboards, then pack the space in between with boots and jackets. Then, when fully loaded, slide it into the truck.

Does anyone know what material(s) gear tunnel floor and walls are made of?

Thank you
