Does anyone know if optional wheels will be available on the R1S ? Are the wheels currently 2 piece similar to the Tesla with removable aero covers ?

Thanks

I don't remember where, but I read that the R1S will be offered with 20" and 22" inch wheels. The show vehicle has the 22" wheels, which I think are pretty good looking.

I really like the look of the larger wheels but I want the smallest diameter wheel that will fit the brakes. More rubber between me and the dirt/rocks/sand. Typically for offroad performance, you are best not going much larger than half the tire diameter for the wheel size.

The tires on the 22" wheels are 32.9" in diameter (275/50/R22). I'd be surprised if the Rivian accommodates wheels as small as 16" or 17".

The prototype R1T is on 275/65 r20, which is a 34.1" tire. I prefer more sidewall on offroad vehicles, and would definitely opt for the 20" wheels vs the 22" (32.8" tire) currently on the R1S.

I would love to see a 295/70 r18 option for a bit more width, height, & sidewall. However, I might still opt for 20" wheel as a compromise between on & off road performance.

I have a feeling it will probably be limited to either 20" or 22" wheels from the factory, but there's always aftermarket if people so choose...

In looking at pictures of the 20" wheel on the truck, there might not be enough clearance for an 18" wheel. I would have to take a closer look in person, but the brake calipers & rotors look pretty big, which is a good thing...

I wonder if the Rivian electronics will accept inputs for different tire diameters to keep the speedometer in calibration and to make other adjustments to accommodate non-factory tire diameters.

They have two different tire sizes now, so the real question is will it be easily configurable or possibly via OTA by request.

I agree.

So far I think we have seen one tire size of one diameter on the truck and a different tire size of a different diameter on the SUV. Since Rivian could drop down to a 20" wheel while preserving virtually the same rolling diameter of the 22" set up by using a 275/60/R20 tire (32.9" vs 33.0"), it makes me wonder whether Rivian has determined the truck should have a larger rolling diameter than the SUV for some reason. If so, that might indicate that the truck will be calibrated to one rolling diameter and the SUV to another. The question it leaves for me is whether the electronics calibration of the truck is fixed for one diameter and the SUV fixed for another, or whether they are both easily configurable for varying diameters.

Same skateboard platform & control architecture, so it's a programmable parameter.

I did read somewhere that both wheel sizes & street vs offroad (all terrain) tire options would be available for both vehicles.

My choice would be a street tire on a 20" wheel...sort of a mix of what they have on the truck & SUV currently.

Before I saw your picture I was thinking 275/65/18 like I have on my Toyota Tundra which I can get Toyo ATII for $225-250 a tire. When the tires jumps up in rim size they get more expensive. I think you are right about the calipers getting in the way with a 18" rim. Hopefully sometime down the line an aftermarket wheel company will make a compatible rim
