Sorry in advance if I’m not to detailed…we had a lot going on.

I started with 84% charge (250 miles) and ended up with 96 miles left when I got to Inyokern. The burger joint at the stop….Classic burgers…👍👍👍! I charged back up to 85% and was on our way to Bishop. I was planning on charging to 100%, which gave me an estimated time of 1 hr 20 mins. There were 2 other R1Ts there, one was a mobile service truck. We decided to hang out at Bishop park so the kids can play. I checked my app about an hr in and there was an error with the charging unit and it asked me to unplug and replug in. We walked back and the charge completed to 93%. I couldn’t gather any data because of the error. I decided to leave with 93% which was enough for the activities we did.

The biggest downside was time, especially when you have 3 kids that just wanted to be in mammoth already. But it was worth it since it was FREE!!!

This Salida CO charger is in a lousy location.
Instead of close to 1 of the 2 US highways nearby, it's in town. If someone is driving US50, they have to drive 2.4 miles (round trip) through town to get there. If you're on US285 it's 10 mi out of the way. Tesla did it right and put their supercharger 900 ft from the intersection of 50 & 285.

I think the idea was that people would be stopping in Salida as a jumping off point for adventures, etc and being at a grocery store for stocking up/restocking was the reasoning? Just my thoughts…not sure what the Tesla charger is near.

I hate to sound cranky, but what do these locations have to do with "adventure"? I thought that was for trailheads or places off the beaten path that might otherwise be tough for an EV to find charging. Inyokern and Bishop are both real towns on a major US highway. And both have Superchargers (as well as Lone Pine in between). Don't get me wrong, more charging is nice, but wake me up when Rivian has DCFC in Panamint Springs, or Borrego Springs or Downieville. Of course since I probably won't get my R1T till 2023 that may be a moot point.
It's coming....

What’s worse is some of these RAN waypoints are located in towns/cities with no confirmed Rivian deliveries. Like, I get that it’s an investment in the future, but why not focus on getting some trucks to the people closest to them?
They're strategic locations between popular trip destinations

Awesome. Was it true plug and play charging? Supercharger network style.

Any official info on how long it'll be free? A year after delivery is what I remember from the Old days....

The Tesla charger is next to a minimart, & pretty close to a grocery & hardware store & an outdoor store. The Rivian charger is near a Safeway, bars, restaurants, local trails, an outdoor store and a river. If you want that then you won't mind driving into town, If you're on the way to adventures in the mountains you'd probably rather do a quick stop on the highway (with food & supplies close by).

Personally, I prefer this approach if "town" isn't too far away. If I'm going to be stopping for 20-40 minutes, I'd rather be some place I can walk to get a coffee, grab a sandwich, or use a restroom in that period of time. The extra 5 minutes of round trip driving allows for doing something more enjoyable than idly waiting for the charge to complete because there are no services within a 10-minute walk of the charger.
