I am confused as to the EA charing rates as some of them don't match what they have on their website, such as the IL and IA rates. Did you incur idle fees or something that you added to the average of the rates. I also assume that you have a pass membership as that basically pays itself with 2 or so charges.

On the ICE cars blocking the chargers, does the hotel do anything about that such as contacting the guests to have them move their cars?
The average charging rates in the table were calculated by simply dividing the total energy drawn by the time of the charging session and then multiplying by 60 to translate kWm to kWh. It could be that the receipt incorrectly reported the amount of energy dispensed or time of the charging session.

When we stopped at EA stations, we made it's point to plug into the 350kWh units. The top charging rate I observed was 212.

Yes, we paid $4 for the pass that discounts the ongoing rate. That works well except you have to top of with at least $10. You can't just pay for what you use.

The hotel attendant didn't have much to say about the parking spots being blocked. There actually were no available spots in the entire lot. It was very late when we rolled in and we were too tired to have much of a discussion. We called the Hilton the next day and they issued us a partial refund and opened a case to investigate why that hotel didn't have enough parking to accommodate all the guests.

I've used the Cadillac EA several times - it's never busy, is somewhat trailer friendly (usually) and I normally get over 200 kW for a while. In TC Blain's has the highest charge rate (62.5 kW), but there is a Blink station at Clinch marina that is 50 kW (most in town are 19.2 kW), and another in a parking lot on Hall street (just a block closer to downtown) that I think is 62.5 kW also - but I'm not certain of that, or if it is even operational. I will try to check it this week and edit this post.

Both of those are very close to downtown and the beach so plug in and make a day of it!

FYI - I have been out to Blain's twice since I got the R1T in March to go into the store, and both times the charged was ICEd - so if you plan on using that I suggest you avoid business hours.

If you are driving North and East of TC, there is an EA (350 kW) in Gaylord and CP (125 kW) in Eastport.
Thanks for the tips!
Good to know about Blaines as that was my goto. Looks like Blink has some issues are Clinch marina.

We just returned home from a week long 3400 mile road trip with our R1T. This is our first EV. The TLDR; the truck performed exceptionally well and charging 26 times was no hassle at all.

My wife and I live in Ann Arbor, MI. We got our R1T about two months ago and decided to take it on a road trip to a wedding in Colorado. I wanted to see what a long distance trip in an EV would be like and I wanted to get it on some trails in the mountains.

The trip was smooth with zero serious incidents. We mostly used the built in navigation to plan our charging stops with some occasional help from plugshare. One gripe with the navigation is that you can't add a stop along the route. For the most part we agreed with the planned charging stops. There was once or twice on the entire trip that we decided to override the charging location and do something that seemed more efficient.

We did have one time where trusting the range estimate gave us a scare. We were crossing Kansas on a long stretch of highway with very few fast charging options. After about an hour of driving I started to notice that our range seemed to be declining much faster than the distance we were covering. I started monitoring more closely and sure enough our range was dropping aggressively. The strong headwinds across the plains were really decreasing our efficiency. A quick check on plugshare confirmed that we had no other fast charging options between us and our planned destination. It was clear we were not going to make it if we just kept on cruising at 75mph. We ended up drafting off a semi going a little slower and saw efficiency pick up from 1.6 miles per kWh to 2 miles per kWh. By time we rolled up to the dispenser, we were at 3 miles of range. Yikes.

Unfortunately, my off-roading experience wasn't all that good. Most of the trails I wanted to go on were closed for no apparent reason. The two trails we did climb on were extremely rocky and in areas with no cell reception. I don't have a spare... I've tried my best to get one from Rivian, but they have a shortage and absolutely refuse to let me buy one. I couldn't enjoy the trails because I was too nervous about getting a puncture and being stranded without any way to do a repair.

Overall, charging was very smooth. The most problematic fast charging experience was having to wait about 15 minutes for a dispenser to open up. Seriously. We stopped to charge 26 times and nearly zero issues. Most stops did have at least one dispenser down for maintenance, but it was no problem because we could just plug into another one. One time a charger seemed to stop because the cable overheated (it was hot to the touch). We simply unplugged and plugged into the other one. Many of the NFC readers were not functioning so we had to spend the extra 20 seconds opening the app to initiate payment a few times. No big deal.

We attempted to charge overnight at hotels with mixed results. My wife has Diamond status with Hilton and we booked their properties that claimed to have EV charging. The first stay was at a Tru by Hilton in Omaha. We rolled up to the station and plugged in no problems. The next one was a Home2 Suites. It only had Tesla stations and they were both blocked by ICE vehicles. After that we got a lot more nervous and gave up on trusting the "EV charging" badge that the hotel advertised.

One night we stayed at an RV park and used the portable charger to plug into the 50a service. This was an overly expensive way to charge. We paid $85 for the site and then another $50 for a tent site because they wouldn't allow us to tent on an RV site. Had we not done this, our cost per mile would have been $0.12 not $0.15.

Finally, a few minor gripes about the vehicle now that I've got over 5k miles in it:
  1. Only the key fob works reliably for me. We spent 15 minutes with a valet driver trying to get the key card to turn on the vehicle. It was really embarrassing that we couldn't get our truck to drive. It wasn't just that one instance. I have never been able to get it to work reliably.
  2. The A/C vent blows directly on my knee even when pointed as far away as possible. When you have the A/C cranking, that can get uncomfortable.
  3. The A/C can't keep up with the heat unless you recirculate the cabin air.
  4. The truck makes lots of annoying loud sounds when cooling itself off. Sometimes it is extremely loud.
  5. The the adaptive cruise slows down way too aggressively. Unlike other vehicles, you have to be centered in an unobstructed lane before it speeds back up. I'm used to it returning to the set speed when you put the blinker on to indicate a lane change. The truck would slow down a ton and then have to speed back up if you didn't push the accelerator when changing lanes
  6. No Android Auto or CarPlay. Just dumb.
  7. No apps; I want to watch videos while charging.
Overall it is an outstanding vehicle and we're very happy with it.

My key takeaway from this is the fact I could do this trip for less than 1/4 what it costs me in my current vehicle. Can't wait to get a Rivian.

That is really slow for the Portage, Michigan EA 350kW CCS charger. Only 62kWH and 146kWH average speed? Is there any explanation?

It would be helpful if you posted the SOC at arrival. That would add context to the charge curve. Assuming you left A2 with 100% SOC, Portage MI is only 96-98mi/away. I imagine you arrived with roughly 50% SOC?

Can't say I miss Android Auto or CarPlay. Does stink to not have ability to watch Netflix or YouTube while parked. How much ya wanna bet the only streaming video service that will be offered is Amazon Prime Video? Lol

Hotel parking is hit or miss. Some places are really good about it - e.g. JW Marriott Marco Island and their monitored & dedicated EV lot. A surprising amount of Hyatt's (even Hyatt Place!) have EV chargers. There was a Hyatt Place in Atlanta with a parking garage that had 6 (or 8, forgot) ChargePoint stations on two levels. It is very annoying to see hotels advertise EV charging, just to show up and find a single J1772 that is ICE'd or occupied. It was amazing and impressive when we found that Hyatt (at just $110-120/nt) with more than a dozen J1772 outlets - definitely made me reconsider hotel loyalty with a single chain. I personally think we're going to hit resistance with hotels, only so many want to deal with EV charging (parking enforcement, electric costs, maintaining the chargers).

Great trip report tho.

Thanks for all the details. Congratulations on your inaugural cross-country trip in the R1T.

That you stopped every 130 miles on average is bad news for me.

The frequency of stops makes the R1S, which can no longer be configured with the Max Pack, much less attractive for my planned uses. I suppose software updates could improve navigation. That and more charging infrastructure could increase miles between charging stops. If software updates also result in faster charging times, maybe.... But as it stands, your ratio of charging minutes per miles travelled is just too high for my needs.

Like some others here, I would gladly give up the now-standard third row seat plus the $10k for a Max Pack. But apparently that is not going to an option.

Apologies if you already knew this, but you use the key card on the driver's inside door panel, not the center console.

It "sometimes" may be working if you use the key card on the door handle to unlock the car you have 60 seconds to also put the truck in drive. If it has been longer you need to tap it to the inside of the driver's side door.

I didn't know this until I read the manual.

Typo: you mean 14-50. These are available at any RV supply as they are used to connect RVs to 14-50R outlets at parks. On the subject of extension cords there are J1772 extension cords available (Amazon) which, with a Tesla Tap, will let you charge from a Tesla Level 2 EVSE even when it is ICED.
Sorry.. newbie here.. what is a "Tesla Tap"? Can I get one on Amazon?

It is an adapter into one end of which you can plug a Tesla charger "wand" and the other end of which you can plug into a Rivian or other J1772 BEV. Yes, you can get them from Amaxon and there are other brands as well. Note: these can only be used for L1 and L2 chargers i.e. no SuperChargers.
