Overall, Doug says it's a great off roader. He points out he loves off roading with his Land Rover Defender and G-Wagen. Doug took it up a very rocky hill with a lot of loose dirt and a VERY steep grade. Many other off road drivers said they wouldn't take their rigs up that hill. The Rivian took it on and did it spectacularly IMO.

Doug said he let some tire pressure out, but the tires still seemed to have a good amount of pressure in them. I'm not sure how much you can safely let out of tires on 20" wheels.

Drawbacks:
  • There is no tire pressure monitor in the Rivian. No big deal IMO, but that's very surprising.
  • No Hill Decent Control. Also surprising, but I think that could be a future software upgrade.
  • Again, Doug says the camera system isn't very good. Mostly talking about image quality. He's the first to say the angles aren't very good. Aren't. there cameras under the truck?
  • No hill hold feature. That is another feature that is pretty common on good off-roaders.
  • No locking Diff. But he does point out that there is a motor at each wheel, but the wheels still slip a lot until the computer figures out that a wheel is slipping. IMO, this is again an issue that can be made better with software.
Benefits:
  • Four motors means no differential hit.
  • Great approach and departure angles.
  • On the trail, it doesn't FEEL heavier or bulkier than a Jeep.
  • It has surprisingly good tires. He was very complementary of the Pirellis. But I saw A LOT of wheel slip that I don't think I would have gotten with the Falkens on my Jeep.
  • When your done off roading, you can go race a Ferrari and WIN.

Id be curious to know which drive mode he was in and what the regen brake settings were. From other reviews, I've seen people stopped on descents I believe without having their foot on the brake. I'd imagine it would also allow for hill hold with max regen on. Or perhaps the weight and grade of the hill were more than the regen could.

Agree that more aggressive tires would have made the hill even easier. Rivian had to have some level of compromise or give up way too much range.

Seriously disappointed by the cameras. He's mentioned it in both videos now. I'm hoping its an OTA fix since its already improved since Breckenridge. Will be very disappointed if its just due to cheap hardware.

At least several of these are OTA updates. Would the tire pressure monitoring be an OTA?

Keep in mind that the earlier reviews were done on Webster Pass. I've gone through it a few times and it is a fairly easy trail.

That depends on if the truck has TPMS sensors in each wheel. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think that was a requirement after the Explorer/Firestone fiasco.

The owners manual lists individual tire pressure display. Assuming that isn’t a misprint, my guess is that it will be an OTA update at some point.

I could have sworn I saw it in at least one of the first review videos from the Colorado event. I'm guessing that they identified an issue with it and pulled it from the software build to patch with an OTA update. If this is Brian's personal truck I'm surprised he didn't address some of these things with Doug, but maybe that was by design.

Thought Doug did good job on this one, with some really insightful points. Hill descent and hill hold sound like a must have to me for off roading.

But the cameras!

Seriously how could Rivian allow their camera tech to be frankly abysmal?

I'm still in disbelief... I absolutely am in love with the camera system JLR has and the invisible car mockup's the screens generate showing all the cars surroundings. I feel like this such a big miss regarding the R1T and R1S.

I hope this is something they can sort out before I'm up for my Max Pack.

We are supposed to get individual wheel tire pressure info in the displays at some point. The TPMS system is there. Keep in mind this is a pre-production demo truck (I think?) that they keep having all these reviewers drive. It’s essentially final, but not fully refined with the software. As I don’t think any of the currently delivered trucks are either. I know there have been several updates and infotainment performance and features are steadily improving.

The Colorado test drive event was an excellent first look at the off-road abilities of the R1T. Like Sgt Beavis says, Webster is pretty easy, but also indicative of what many do as “off-road”. Even for serious off-roaders, that’s the level of stuff that covers the majority of what their vehicles will do off-road. It’s the level of trail you drive on to get to all the serious stuff.

That loose dirt slope Doug took the R1T on would be the downfall of many Jeeps or common off road vehicles. It did look like he could have let a bit more air out of those tires, but more aggressive trail tires would have made a much bigger impact there. The Pirellis are light to moderate AT tires that perform rather well for all-around use. They drive nice on the road and take sensible trails, BLM or logging roads just fine. The Colorado test drive from start in Denver to the trails near Breckinridge are exactly what those tires are designed for. These Pirelli Scorpion AT are very comparable, or downright interchangeable with the Falken Wildpeak AT3W. I think the Pirellis have just a bit more substantial shoulders on them and seem to offer some with higher load ratings — necessary for the R1T or other 3-ton truck.

The big thing I think Doug missed in his review is the drive modes. He did not address the various drive modes in his full review and there was no indication that he changed out of all-purpose drive mode when doing his off-roading. Because the off-road/crawl mode(s) on the Rivian do have one-pedal hill descent and controlled acceleration. We are suppsed to have virtual lockers as well where the motors sync to reproduce a solid axle or locker effect. The R1T doing that slope in all-purpose mode just makes it all the more impressive. I was cringing a bit with him riding the brakes so hard on descent, knowing he (should) have a better option.

It'll try, but you're still going to get independent wheel wheel slip. Just the nature of the math problem with four motors.

Pretty sure that's an early production truck as others have noted.

Agreed. I test drove a LR Defender and the cameras were outstanding. I just don’t want something that has cameras that were as bad as those on my Gen 2 Raptor.

The (OTA) fixable TPM issue is not a concern for me.
My big concern is that this is the second time a review mentioned the poor quality of the cameras in this 2022 (model year) car.

If they intend to use these low(er) resolution cameras for some form of autopilot this seems like it would be a significant limitation - especially for a car in this price range!
Similarly to the Tesla Model S and X, the R1T and R1S should be released and promoted as reference models for Rivian (the aspirational benchmark) for the rest of their upcoming lineup.
Having hardware that is this poor is similar to a flagship phone with an old cpu or camera - after a while, software fails to compensate.
Hopefully this is addressed before the release of the R1S - after all, it is delayed.... again!

I completely agree with you as to what driving setting he was driving on. I have heard Rivian employee explaining in changing a decent setting so that the speed can adjust in every inclination.

No Hill Descent Control. Also surprising, but I think that could be a future software upgrade.
Not an off-road expert by any means but rock/crawl largely does away with this need. In my ICE, the descent is needed to gear down the car and offer some resistance, otherwise it just accelerates all the way down. When I was one-pedal driving in Sonoma, the Rivian would literally just stop on on an incline unless you actively nudged it forward with "gas". I doubt that mode is coming because it doesn't seem needed, IMO.
