I just wrapped up a 9 day road trip from Indiana to Oregon (3 days in OR), and back. I visited a cousin in Denver, hiked Silver Falls State Park in OR, drove down the OR coast, took the r1t offroading on the dunes/beach at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Siuslaw NF, spent a day in Eugene, then headed home.

I don't know that I'll put together a comprehensive overview, but attached are some pics and I mostly wanted to put this here as an AMA for anyone approaching a road trip or any other questions!

Stats:

2023 R1T Forest/Forest
21" factory road wheels/tires
Quad/large pack

Outbound stats (includes all of the travel around Oregon plus like an hour of the return trip because I forgot to reset the trip odo):
2,832.6 miles
62 mph
46 hr 2 m
2.16 mi/kwh
1,315.1 kwh

Return stats:
2422.2 miles
70 mph
34 hr 50 m
2.06 mi/kwh
1,184.4 kwh

What was your longest/slowest charge location?
TBH? Charging at the RAN in Lincoln City, OR may have been the longest because I wanted to arrive at Florence with ~70% charge and that was the closest fast charger. Maybe an hour, 1:10 long. There may have been others of similar length, but not because of crappy charging, just long distances to cover (Wyoming for example).

The worst was at a Casey’s in Iowa (

All four chargers were derated below 100kw, so it turned a 20 minute stop into a 40 minute stop. We stayed only long enough to get what we needed and then moved to the next available fast charger.

There were other bad experiences, but we made it through by either switching dispensers, or skipping the stop and moving to the next one where possible.

Well done. Stunning photos. Thank you for sharing this epic adventure. Did you ever used Conserve mode during this trip? If so, what percentage would you say it was? Thanks again. Great write up

Thanks! The truck and Oregon sure do make it easy to take good pictures ?

I used conserve for pretty much all the highway portions (thousands of miles I guess). I didn’t run AP on any long stretches, so I don’t have any quantitative analysis, but using conserve didn’t *seem* to make a big difference. It’s maybe 10% at best. Now that you have the option to choose drive mode in the route planning in the app, you can see what difference it thinks it’ll make. When I ran my route in conserve vs AP, it said conserve would eliminate two charging stops. Given the length of my trip, I think that’s about as good as it gets.

My conclusion is to only use conserve on super long trips or if you really need to stretch the miles to make it to the next fast charger. Maybe they’ll make conserve more conservey in a future update? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm a bit struck by makeup of the pictures... if it were an ICE vehicle, would half the pictures be of it getting filled up at a gas station? I suppose it's a (probably unintended) reminder for us that charging's still a major part of our lives with the current infrastructure limitations.

Nice pictures, even so!

Totally agree. Once Tesla opens their chargers next year sometime, it will be a little easier. I also think that once the battery technology gets better (capacity and charging speed), it will be less stressful to take long trips.

I would equate the state of EV's somewhat like cars of the 70's. I remember on family trips having to stop frequently to add water to the radiator because the car overheated. Back then, if you got 15 miles per gallon you were lucky. Now, fast forward to now and the ICE vehicles are getting 25 (average on the low-end and 35 to 40 on average). I think EV's will get there in a few years.

I am glad to say that we as Rivian (or Tesla or VW etc) will be considered "old EV folks". We will sit back and tell our story around the fireplace......."Back in my day, it would take us 45 mins. to charge to 80%, now you young people can go to 100% in 5 mins."

Yeah definitely unintended. I wanted to feature the truck given the forum. It's just a reality that we did 3 things of interest with the truck (driving, charging, and goofing around in the sand) :) TBF, some of the charging stops were great places to stop and take in the scenery

I still find it rather humorous that I did not know Lincoln City OR would have a RAN station when I ordered my R1T. I find it useful if we do a doughnut around the state, leaving me with very low SOC as I am getting close to home. The way we typically do it, I still have the option to charge at EA at Walmart in Newport if I'm too concerned to go for it from Newport to Lincoln City.

But you cannot argue with free charging - at least for now.

Bravo--love the color of the truck.

Did you go through South Dakota at all? Planning a coast to coast and having trouble figuring out how I make it through without a big detour.

I did not, so I don’t know the infrastructure there. We went west through Missouri/Kansas/colorado, and east through Wyoming/Nebraska/iowa. The stations are sparse in Wyoming. It was fine in warm weather, but don’t forget that cold weather will decrease range, so you may be forced to decrease speed in sparse environments like Wyoming.
